Beautiful hotel in a stunning location on the river. Our room was very spacious , clean and very comfortable. Food was excellent with a good choice. The staff were lovely, friendly and very attentive. Would definitely return when in Sri Lanka.

Disappointing 3/5 stars at best, tatty poor and overpriced

I never usually leave a negative review but this hotel is so disappointing. arrived today and just feel the entire experience is poor. got chased through the hotel by the chef on arrival trying to persuade us to have lunch and this evening about 2 bottles in their entire wine list are available and massively over priced. I have stayed in many 5 stars hotels and tbh this just doesn't hit the mark. Came here for 2 nights from Amatla Lake (which was outstanding) sadly this is not! i would give it 3/5 stars at best yet charging high end 5 star prices.Also location is not great and just feels old and tatty.Would not recommend or come back. Thank goodness we are leave the day after tomorrow.

Far Below 5-Star Standards!!

Had dinner at the buffet at Mahaweli Reach Hotel with my family on 15th March 2026, and it was extremely disappointing for a 5-star hotel.The soup station with two varieties and the bread corner was quite nice. Unfortunately, the rest of the buffet did not meet the standard expected from a property of this level.The salad station was very basic with only a few options available and no fresh vegetables to make a simple salad. It definitely needs improvement. Even if the occupancy was low, the selection felt far too limited.The hot buffet had Western, Sri Lankan, and Indian sections with several rice varieties, but the overall food options were limited and the taste was not really up to standard. At the live stations, Mongolian rice and noodles were available and the pasta corner was decent. However, the hopper station had issues with the batter sticking to the hopper pans, causing delays, and the final product was not good at all.The dessert station was another letdown. There were only a few options available. The hot chocolate pudding had turned into a thin crispy layer in the chafing dish, and we almost had to scrape it to get some. The Watalappam and caramel éclairs were the only desserts that stood out. Considering Mahaweli Reach cakes are well known among people in Kandy, the dessert station was surprisingly below expectations.On a positive note, the chef team was very attentive. The buffet was constantly monitored and refilled, and the chefs even tried to bring food directly to the table when guests had to wait at live stations. The Executive Sous Chef and Chef Mihira were particularly outstanding. Their effort and service were highly appreciated.The service team was acceptable but lacked warmth. A welcoming smile and better guest interaction would make a noticeable difference.This review is based only on the dinner buffet on 15th March 2026. The hotel is located in a beautiful setting with a lovely view, but the buffet quality needs serious improvement to live up to the expectations of a 5-star hotel.
