Disappointing Service — Won’t Stay Again

    rating16 Sept 2025

We’ve stayed at Mattihol before and used to really enjoy it, but after our recent experience, we won’t be returning. We had an early train at 6:30 am, and since the hotel shuttle doesn’t run that early, they gave us a voucher for a taxi. Great—problem solved. Later, however, the receptionist asked for the voucher back, telling us we “wouldn’t need it.” We trusted that information. The next morning, we took the taxi as planned. At drop-off, the driver told us we had to pay—48 CHF for a two-minute ride. This was a complete surprise since we’d been told the voucher covered it.I contacted the hotel, expecting them to make this right. Instead, they first refused reimbursement, then later emailed saying I should personally call the taxi company to sort it out. That is not my responsibility—it was their mistake, and it left us feeling like we were being punished for having an early departure. To add to the frustration, the receptionist who mishandled the voucher seemed inattentive from the moment we arrived—asking where we were from, but not listening to our answers, and clearly not listening during training either. This experience soured what used to be one of our favorite hotels in Zermatt. Sadly, we won’t be staying here again. Dennis Szelkowski, Geschäftsführer at Hotel Matthiol, responded to this review We are very sorry to read your review. However, we feel it is important to clarify the situation. In your email to us, you wrote: “is there anything you can do for us, or should we leave a negative review for the hotel?” (E-Mail written from you on Saturday 13. September 2025 09:29h). We find it regrettable that you felt the need to threaten us with a review in order to obtain a refund.Following your complaint, we immediately spoke both with our receptionist and with the taxi driver (the owner of the company) involved. Both confirmed that you were informed correctly: before 08:00, due to local regulations in Zermatt, only regular taxis may operate and guests must pay the fare directly. This rule applies to all hotels and all guests. We would also like to highlight that we consistently receive very positive feedback about the receptionist in question. The description of “inattentive” does not reflect the experience of the many other guests who have praised his service. The information you shared in your review does not correspond with what our staff and the taxi company reported to us. From our perspective, it seems this matter is not about misinformation but rather about your wish to receive a refund that cannot be granted under these circumstances. We regret that this has overshadowed your previous positive experiences with us. Nevertheless, we kindly ask for fairness and accuracy when describing such situations publicly.Best regards from Zermatt, Dennis & Mareike Szelkowski + Matthiol Team

A Wonderful Stay at Hotel MatthiolWe absolutely loved our stay at Hotel Matthiol. The hotel went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, including arranging for an extra bed for a friend. Our room was exceptional, featuring a private sauna, steam room, and a luxurious soaker tub—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. We also made use of the spa facilities daily and were thrilled to have them almost entirely to ourselves. there is an awesome Nordic spa experience awaiting you here. We even partook in the mud bath. Don't miss the scented shower experience with hot and cold rain showersThe front desk and restaurant staff were INCREDIBLE, providing excellent service throughout our stay. I had many questions prior to arriving, and they were always patient and helpful in guiding me. The hotel’s location is ideal, within walking distance of the Matterhorn lift and just a short walk to a bus stop, which we used to access other lifts and trains. The complimentary transportation to and from the train station for check-in and check-out was an added convenience that we appreciated. The restaurant was fantastic overall, and we had a memorable dinner in one of the charming fondue Kotas. The breakfast team were awesome and always helpful and kind. I made for a great start to each day. However, we were disappointed with the wagyu beef steak, which, at approximately 150 CHF, did not meet expectations. Having enjoyed wagyu in Japan and other countries, we felt the steak, while tender, was not authentic wagyu. Additionally, the pillows were a bit too soft for our liking. One thing to note is that the buses stop running in the evening, so if you’re downtown, a taxi is your only option—and taxis in Zermatt are very expensive. That said, the hotel’s location is a bonus, as there are several excellent dining options nearby. Just past the bus stop, we discovered a wonderful Swiss restaurant with a terrace and stunning views, making it an ideal spot for lunch.Overall, our stay was fantastic, and we highly recommend Hotel Matthiol for its outstanding service, excellent facilities, and convenient location. Amazing!!!!

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel during our ski trip to Zermatt. A huge thank you to the incredibly welcoming staff who went above and beyond to make our stay special – they even organized a surprise for my friend’s birthday, which was such a thoughtful touch! The spa was fantastic and exactly what we needed after long days on the slopes, and the breakfast selection was excellent. The rooms were clean and cozy, with a lovely balcony offering breathtaking views of the Matterhorn. Although the hotel is a bit farther from the town center, we appreciated being away from the crowds, and the convenient bus service made it easy to reach the funicular.Overall, a truly memorable stay – highly recommended! Beyond expectations at every turn!!!

I had tons of questions and bizarre needs to host my cousin and best friend. Trying to arrange massage in advance for my Bf with a back injury just prior to the voyage. The hotel always responded within the same day and help me to make sure all was perfect for the group…….. including pick up at the train withAll our gear!!Zermatt is not cheap, but this hotel has everything at a great price!!!There is a very underused spa on site and we often felt like no one but is knew about it. Great for apres ski / pre dinner fix me ups. All the staff provided extreme hospitality and over exceeded all of our needs and desires. We had two suppers at the hotel. My only complaint would be the Wagu entrecôte is pricy and we all felt it was not really Wagu….. not my first Wagu and this was not it. But we love the service. And special care. This hotel is far from the village but easily accessible with the free local bus. Late nights might cost you some by taxi but you can always walk home ….. i am not a big walker but we enjoyed to location. The hotel is close to many well reviewed restaurants. Try the hotel for the Kotas fondue experience… you get your own private “igloo” for your experience. The hotel also has an excellent wine list. A favourite was the Alexandre vs the Ham Factory. We booked a spa room and used the stream room/shower and sauna. The sauna was awesome for drying our ski wear. We loved this place…. And I forgot to mention you are sooooo close to the Matterhorn the views are awesome Dennis Szelkowski, Geschäftsführer at Hotel Matthiol, responded to this review Thank you so much for your great review which is highly appreciated.
