Location

This is a piece of paradise on the tropical Zanzibar island of Unguja. Chuini Zanzibar Beach Lodge (formerly known as Hakuna Matata) is surrounded by palm trees and has the warm azure Indian Ocean right on the doorstep, the ideal beach getaway. The historic Old Fort ofZanzibar and Forodhani Gardens is just a 20-minute drive away offering guests the chance to immerse themselves in the local culture. The lodge is on the west coast of Zanzibar, 12 km north from Stone Town and a 20-minute drive from the airport and town. Taxis and public transport are available to guests directly from the hotel.

Facility

Guests can enjoy the pleasant ambience of one of the 12 bungalows and a villa/house. The following room categories are also available: 13 rooms. The friendly staff at the reception desk are happy to answer any questions. Amenities include a baggage storage service and a safe. Wireless internet access (no extra charge) is provided to guests. The tour desk offers assistance with booking excursions. The bungalow complex has a range of facilities for guests with disabilities. The complex has wheelchair-accessible facilities and a lift. Film fans will find plenty of 'lights, camera, action' at the cinema. A garden provides extra space for rest and relaxation in the open air. Additional facilities include a TV room. Guests arriving by car can park their vehicles in the car park for no extra charge. Further services and facilities include a 24-hour security service, a babysitting service, a childcare service, a car hire service, a transfer service, room service, a laundry service, a hairdresser, a coin-operated laundry and a hotel shuttle bus. Active guests can make use of the bicycle hire service to explore the surrounding area. A fax machine is available for guests' business needs.

Rooms

Air conditioning and a fan ensure that rooms maintain comfortable temperatures. A balcony is included as standard in some rooms. Extra beds can be requested. A safe and a desk or, for an additional fee, a minibar are also available. Extra comforts include a tea/coffee station. WiFi (no extra charge) comes as standard in the rooms. Guests will also find slippers in their rooms. A hairdryer and bathrobes are available in the bathrooms, which are equipped with a shower. For extra comfort in the bathrooms, guests are offered cosmetic products. Wheelchair-friendly rooms with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms are also available. The complex has family rooms, non-smoking rooms and smoking rooms.

Sport

Guests can enjoy a refreshing swim in the outdoor pool area. Comfortable sun loungers are available on the sun terrace. Refreshing drinks are served at the poolside snack bar. For guests who wish to keep active, fishing and horse riding are available. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy canoeing, snorkelling and diving. Sport and leisure facilities at the complex include billiards and yoga. A spa, beauty salon and massage treatments are available in the wellness area.

Meals

The dining area includes 4 restaurants and a bar. Refreshing drinks at the beach bar are a perfect way to enjoy warm weather. Full board can be booked. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available. Special meals, including diet meals, are also available. The complex also offers special catering options.

    Hotel Chuini Zanzibar offers breathtaking sunset views in a relaxed, intimate setting, with spacious rooms equipped with mosquito nets and tea/coffee facilities. Conveniently close to the airport, spice farms, and Stone Town, it balances easy access with serene escape. Cleanliness is impeccable, and the staff deliver exceptional service — warm, efficient, and truly memorable, with Zabron and Grisham deserving a special mention. Fresh, flavorful food highlights the region’s offerings, and amenities creatively incorporate castle ruins for a unique atmosphere, though pool lounger cushions could use refreshing. While light sleepers may notice noise from a nearby club on occasion, the stunning location, outstanding hospitality, and friendly staff make this a highly recommended stay.

    Rustic, chic, boutique paradise!

    This was my third visit to Chuini ZNZ Lodge. I love it here. If you are looking for relaxation and to be away from the hot spot tourist areas, this is for you. There's only 11 villas/bungalows and they are spaced out over the property. The setting of the ruins is magical and the sun sets directly in front of the lodge every evening. The team headed by Suhaila, the manager, are what makes your stay so special. Every team member is warm and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Chuini is not located in the main tourist hot spots, but it's easy to take a day trip to other parts of the island. If you are coming to ZNZ to party every night, Chuini may be too quiet for you and you should head north. The food is delicious with plenty of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We stayed for 12 nights and ate out only once. Fantastic massage available on site too. Some of the reviews mention silly things like lizards and insects in the rooms. That's standard when travelling in tropical countries and they are totally harmless. This is a 4 star hotel, so don't go with 5 star expectations. It's rustic, chic and boutique.

    Such a peaceful and charming place! Beautiful small hotel built around old palace ruins, with spacious bungalows, lush gardens, and stunning ocean views. The sunsets from the pool and restaurant are magical. Great food and truly wonderful, service-minded staff. No real beach (you can swim at high tide via a small staircase, but the water had some debris and garbage), so we only enjoyed the lovely pool. So don’t count on beach time or swimming in the ocean while here. Perfect spot for a few days of total relaxation – the massage at the spa was amazing!

    From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped in the warm and welcoming atmosphere of Chuini Zanzibar Lodge. The staff were absolutely amazing – genuinely friendly and always ready to assist with a smile. The luxury rooms were spacious and beautifully appointed, providing a perfect haven for relaxation.The culinary experience was exceptional; every meal was delicious, and the variety was impressive. And let's not forget the breathtaking sunsets – truly a sight to behold!The General Manager was incredible, clearly passionate about ensuring every guest had a memorable stay. You can definitely feel the Newmark touch – a testament to the high standards of service and quality.A special highlight was the surprise birthday celebration! The staff's enthusiastic singing and the delectable chocolate cake made my special day even more memorable.We had an absolutely fantastic stay and will definitely be returning. Highly recommend Chuini for a truly unforgettable Zanzibar experience.

    Terrible experience. The pictures online are very misleading. Hotel is rundown and in need of a lot of work. There were so many bugs in our room and the mosquitoe net had large holes in it. The service was very poor. We typically waited over an hour for food in the restaurant. I would highly recommend avoiding this hotel
