3 star hotel at best I would not recommend

    rating23 Jul 2023

A 3 star Hotel at best! I wouldn't recommed staying here. The hotel is in a great location so maybe that's why it's 4 star, however, the reception staff are awful and lack basic customer care. They as well as the security are biased against black guests which is bizarre as it a hotel in Africa. It was the most unafrican hotel I've stay in during my 5 week long vacation between zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. They prioritise Italian guests and do not hide this fact. I was stopped on a daily basis by security and asked if I was staying at the hotel! Despite me staying for almost a week. ”I choose to stay at Veraclub sunset beach after travelling around Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania for the past 5 weeks. I stayed in 2 other hotels in the same area. One was 5 star and the other was 3 and decided on veraclub because I wanted the same location but for cheaper than the 5 star hotel I stayed in 2 doors down. Let's start with the postives: The location is stunning and right on the beach. The room is large, but dated and had a good size bathroom although there were no sprays attached to the toilet to clean yourself, which I thought was weird as Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. The view from the room is also nice. Now for the cons: I stayed on a b&b basis as I am familiar with the area and wanted to eat in the local restaurants for the variety. On arrival I had travelled from mainland Tanzania so didn't check in until late. I slept as I was tired and didn't go to dinner until 9.10pm. I asked what was available and was told nothing. As there was hardly anything left from the buffet I said no problem what can I order? And was told nothing as the kitchen is closed?? So I ordered food from one of the nearby restaurants I had eaten from prior. I then experienced a bizarre interaction with the night reception staff and security. By the time the food came it was shortly before 10pm. The security refused to let the delivery through. The delivery man called me to come to reception to collect the food but then wasn't allowed entry to bring the food to me. I asked the receptionist what issue was and then was told several different stories, firstly apparently someone was drunk at the gate asking to be let in and because the person was black as I am black they assumed it was to do with me? I was taken aback so I said I am hungry and haven't eaten since I left Dar es Salaam at 4pm. I ordered my dinner as there is option to eat. The night manager then came and told me you are not allowed to order food. I asked him if he was crazy and didn't realise I was a paying guest. I didn't understand as the hotel doesn't have room service the facility to order outside of the buffet times (the dinner buffet finishes is 7.30-930pm); I am not sure what he expected me to do? Then there was the daily stops and checks by security as at the time I was the second of 2 black guests in the hotel. I didn't realise what was happening at first until I noticed that only myself and the other black guests were being stopped. It was awful. I was asked daily do I stay here made to show my wrist band and on one occasion when I came back from an excursion via the beach I was pounced on my 2 security men asked for my wrist band as it was dark by then, after holding my arm up to show my wrist band I was then asked what my room number is and then escorted to my door. I complained about this to the reception the next day and the man at reception stared at me blank and shrugged. I stayed in resort two doors down in my first week and never had any issues like this and that resort is 5 stars? Then there are the facilities:-The WiFi doesn't work -The phone in the room doesn't work I was in 301-The housekeeping barely clean the rooms. -when you call reception to ask for anything you are told I'll call back and then ignored. - there is no room service or option to order food aside from eat at the buffet and if you miss the buffet times and order food from.nearby restaurants the hotel apparently had a policy of no outside food and the and night manager will be extremely rude if you order food despite the lack of facilties. If it wasn't for the fact I had been in zanzibar and mainland Tanzania for over a month and know that this hotel experience was unusual. My trip would have been ruined. If it is your first time visiting zanzibar don't stay at Veraclub especially if your a black person but if your Italian then I guess you're good

wonderful holiday on the most beautiful beach

    rating07 Mar 2023

Rooms of a decent standard, efficient air conditioning, working fridge, safe for free. Great lunches and dinners, something different every day, always tasty. Cold beer and a choice of red and white wine with lunch and dinner. The drinks in the ALL option are very weak, basically just something similar to juice. All alcoholic beverages are charged extra $6 each. The only problem is the animations, and the animators themselves. With a few exceptions, they speak only Italian, all entertainment is Italian. The worst thing, however, is that the animators completely ignore English-speaking guests. The hotel management should do something about it.

Not a bad hotel ... as long as you are Italian

    rating17 Feb 2023

It is decent hotel located at a beautiful beach – one of those Zanzibar beaches which are least influenced by the tides, accessible for swimming / snorkeling almost any time, regardless of the tides. The hotel’s area is well-kept, full of flowering exotic plants and palm trees.Rooms are big, sufficiently clean but a bit worn out already. Basic equipment, certainly no luxury in the rooms. Air conditioning working but not super effective.Good choice and quality of food, dishes are local, international and typical Italian.Local hotel staff are friendly. The Italian staff are friendly too … but mainly for other Italians. Non-Italian guests are usually ignored, as if they were completely transparent. This is the biggest con of this hotel – you can sense a kind of national discrimination that I have not seen in Europe for a very long time. Even though I speak some Italian I felt like a second category guest. The Italian animation staff intentionally avoid crossing sight with non-Italian guests, they don’t invite them to play beach volleyball or darts (no language is needed for that), they do not even say “ciao” or “how are you”, they are not interested if other guests are having a good time, they ignore non-Italian kids who want to join the Italian kids singing “socu baci vira” on stage – no language is needed to sing it. Just a bit of openness and good will would be sufficient to make all guests comfortable regardless of their nationality, even if the Italians dominate. You can often see them scanning guests based on nationality and then approaching only those who are Italian. The problem is that the hotel is not in Italy, it eagerly accepts money paid by non-Italian guests and it cooperates with non-Italian travel agencies who accommodate their clients there. There are no efforts made to make the non-Italian guests feel welcome. My advice: include non-Italian guests in those activities which do not require speaking Italian; say a few words to the audience in English to introduce the Masai or acrobatic show; think of some activities for children where common language is not necessary (socu baci vira is one of them); don’t be afraid to smile to non-Italian guests, say hi, exchange a few sentences in English. If this is too much, do not cooperate with foreign travel agencies, make it clear that it is an Italian hotel for Italians only.
