    Best stay in japan

    rating17 Jan 2026

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 An Unforgettable Stay! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟This place is truly a hidden gem! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with the warmest smiles and the most genuine hospitality. Every staff member made us feel like family—so friendly, attentive, and always ready to help with anything we needed. The stay itself was beyond amazing. The room was spotless, cozy, and incredibly comfortable—but the highlight was definitely the private onsen in the room. Soaking in the hot spring after a long day was pure bliss. Calm, relaxing, and absolutely luxurious. And the food… WOW. Every meal felt like a masterpiece. Beautifully presented, fresh, flavorful, and full of local character. Each dish was a delight, and we looked forward to every single meal.Perfect service, perfect stay, perfect food, perfect onsen.I would come back in a heartbeat—and recommend this place to anyone looking for a truly special experience. 💖

Exceptional hotel. Staff amazing . Despite language problems they were so helpful and smiling. Nothing was a problem. Had a room with a private onsen and western beds. Wonderfully relaxing and such a peaceful spot. Dinner in the room was outstanding as was breakfast. Sadly only had one night. Feel so relaxed. A welcome oasis in our two week tour of Hokkaido.

I fell in love with Otaru Kourakuen

    rating23 Jan 2024

It was a dream come true for me to stay here during the winter season. I had been searching for a ryokan in the Hokkaido area, and I instantly fell in love with Otaru Kourakuen. Upon stepping into their reception area, you immediately feel the warm hospitality or 'omotenashi.' They even offered snacks and refreshments during check-in. My friend and I stayed in a Japanese Style Maisonette Room with an Open-Air Bath for 2 nights. It was perfect to experience the snowfall while using the onsen! The room was spacious, and the open-air bath was located on the 2nd floor. Everything was clean, and the room amenities were complete. The overall experience was exceptional, including the sumptuous Japanese dinner and breakfast. The staff excelled in providing their service. I would love to stay here again.

    Humble place with great food

    rating06 Nov 2023

It’s a little ryokan run by old locals. Communication might be a bit difficult, but if you try, it will be manageable! You will have to choose the breakfast and dinner timings, as well as for the private onsen when you first check in. For us, check-in was at 3pm (a little bit late imo) and check-out is at 10am.We booked a room that comes with breakfast, dinner and booking of the private onsen. The room was very humble that comes with a toilet (no shower/bath as you wash yourself during the onsen) and a balcony kinda thing. The vibes were very comfy and simple, which I enjoyed. Dinner was very very delicious and filling. There was beef sukiya, sushi and tempura (plus rice). For the private onsen, you‘ll have to head down to get the key and go back up to the onsen. It has an inside and outside onsen with an outside view. It is only for 45 mins but it is enough for a 35 mins soak and 10 mins wash. (30 mins is more than enough for a hot soak)The staff were very helpful and the entire experience was very positive. If you are looking for a posh experience, there are other more expensive ryokans out there. A little downside is that they only provide yukata that are worn only indoors, so there isn’t any outdoor yukata for you to wear out and take pictures. But other than that, it’s really nice!

Absolute fabulous onsen place in every sense

    rating04 Aug 2023

Let’s start with the Service staff. Customer facing warm attentive accommodating responsive smiling. Choose any positive word and it will be here in this wonderful onsen resort family managed with the son at the front to welcome you. Shiro San. Mother and owner father are both very active in the daily management Lobby evening cocktail hour is pleasant and relaxing. Sink into the warm ambiance of the lobby coffee beer area with eye catching decor n warm service. Cookies nuts beer coffee n wine are served here. Breakfast n dinner are a delight n foodie experience especially in room and whether in the different dinning areas western or Japanese. Such a delightful experience to have both like we did. Food n beverage is excellent and we totally enjoyed our 2nd and 3rd nights dinner in room. Onto the onsen now. There are 2 public onsen areas and I tried both. I was totally blown away by the evening session at the onsen located at the lower level. Out of this world is the description with Indoor hot pool Outdoor hot pool Outdoor cold poolSauna n steam room nFireplace The onsen on the lobby level is different as it has a high tech sauna room with a hot area where you can lie down to enjoy the heat on back or front. Car park is ample and a very very short drive to the lobby drop off pick up with a shelter should it rain. A must come n try
