Crack Den / Prison vibes - we left after checkin!!

    rating15 Mar 2026

I really never write a bad review, however & we did get this hotel as part of a mystery Wowcher holiday (would never have picked it ourselves). But it truly was awful, like a mix between a prison and a crack den! 😄 We actually checked in and checked back out within 15 mins. I’m not against cheap and cheerful holidays as long as the place is well maintained and clean - this was not! The location is actually okay and there are lovely restaurants, cafes and bars in St Paul’s bay, but if you are looking to stay here just book the QAWRA hotel and spa resort, it’s beautiful , just round the corner and not expensive at all.

Review of CARDOR Holiday Complex (Canifor Hotel), MaltaThe hotel is terrible. We booked our trip through AirGuru Latvia, and I can say with full confidence that we will never travel through this agency again.LocationThe hotel is located in St. Paul’s Bay. The sea is just a few minutes’ walk away, and the Malta National Aquarium is also nearby. Objectively speaking, the location is quite good. The hotel itselfCARDOR Holiday Complex consists of apartments that are part of the Canifor Hotel. The property is very outdated and worn down. Already upon entering the reception area, it became clear that nothing good should be expected. There are 4 stars displayed at the entrance, but I would give the apartments no more than 1 star, and I highly doubt the hotel itself is any better.ApartmentsUpon entering the apartment, we noticed a very strong and unpleasant smell. At first, I couldn’t identify what it was, but in the morning, after using the shower and seeing a cockroach in the bathroom, I realized the smell most likely came from chemicals used to fight pests. For more than half of the night, I couldn’t sleep because the toilet was constantly running, and the noise echoed throughout the room. Eventually, I managed to find where to turn off the water. Shortly after, another issue appeared — the refrigerator, which looked at least 30+ years old, was making an unbearable noise. I solved this by unplugging it.During the night, sleep was also disturbed by a draft, which occasionally shook the door. I never managed to figure out where it was coming from. The room itself was in a horrible condition:peeling and dirty walls,a very old and dirty stove, some kind of rope hanging from the boiler on the wall (apparently intended for drying clothes),the shower holder came off the wall at the first touch, towels seemed washed but had stains, ants were running across the floor. The corridors leading to the room were in the same poor condition — peeling walls and dirty floors. On the ground floor, there was a strong smell of chlorine, likely because there was a laundry room or something similar behind one of the doors.BreakfastBreakfast was tasteless. The bacon was so hard it felt like chewing cardboard. The juice was acceptable — obviously diluted — but nothing special.Final experienceWe arrived at the hotel during the night. In the morning, my wife and I went on an экскурsion around Malta. We returned around 4:00 PM, checked out immediately, and moved to another hotel, as staying here was simply unbearable. The hotel was paid for 4 nights, but since the booking was made through AirGuru Latvia, the reception refused to refund the money. We submitted a complaint to the agency, but so far, we have only received one response:“Hello! Thank you for your message, the information has been forwarded.” (December 15)That was the only reply — no further response or resolution.ConclusionI do not recommend this hotel and will never use this agency’s services again.

Cheap, but just don't go there

    rating03 Dec 2025

Cheap, but just don't go there.Let's start with the front door, it's only unlocked 9-4, entry for the other 17 hours is through a hotel around the corner, taking a lift downstairs, walking through a public area, exiting to the outdoor pool area, sliding down a wet tiled ramp to enter the apartment block from the rear. Hopefully, but not always, the lights will be on. Take a lift to your required floor ( only available when housekeeping aren't keeping it on one of the five floors) and find your apartment number. Discover Beds probably 25-40 years oldSofa of similar age where the padding had failed years ago.Metal framed single glazed patio doors which may or may not have a handle- but didn't lock. One of ours was badly cracked and held together with sticky tape. Pray that you are not facing the street which seems to be the rat run as pubs and clubs empty. Where the exceptionally expensive market opposite will power washed between 1 & 5am; where one way traffic will include refuse lorries between 3 & 6am followed by the horns of vehicles being held up by the need to stop and collect refuse. Look down and admire the derelict looking entrance canopy. In your kitchen you may well find a two ring hob or oven ( running both together is impossible, and rings are either on or off.Judging by the rust ours was probably 1970's vintage. No kettle to make your self catering beverages. One large pan and one milk pan, two wobbly fry pans which are no longer nonstick. One glass bowl and colander. An assortment of glass dishes some of which may be chipped, an assortment of steel cutlery including a bread knife and small vegetable knife with a large notch in the blade, and a small assortment of utensils completed by an absolute disgrace of a chopping board in green and black plastic. Towels are constantly in short supply so don't expect hand towels or a bath mat to sop up the water from your shower.Pillows and duvets are depending on what life remains in the polyester. Clients should be cleary warned in advance, that deposits will be required for, a/c and television controls, and the safe key. The very small TV ( think 1980's monitor for an home computer) will not offer you it's two English language channels without the remote. The a/c is only in the bedroom- not ideal for off season Clients where the temperature indoors is even colder than outside. There is an indoor "heated" pool but the general consensus was that the heater was turned off- why else was it frequently unused? A small sauna which seemed to be set for pre-teenage children, and a jacuzzi. The restaurant offers food at lunch/dinner which apartment clientele can purchase. Vegan is non existent, g/f and lactose free haven't yet been discovered and the items on offer would never reach EU/UK required temperature for service. In addition, be prepared to have restaurant staff stripping down tables before 19.30. Any plans for a lingering dinner with your partner are impossible at the Canifor hotel. In addition the cafe bar adjoining is locked and in darkness by 21.00 including the only disabled assisted access route. Ring a bell and wait (frequently in the rain for us), on a staff member coming downstairs to open a door. Just don't expect them to put lights on.As well as being considerably quieter, the rear of the apartment block has been decorated to avoid sticking out like a sore thumb. All housekeeping seems to be done by a variety of men of Asian ( think Indian continent) extraction. Not ideal if all the residents are ladies and in residence. The only real plus point was the efficiency of the water boiler, always hot water when on, even on second or third shower.Door locking is still 19/20th century, a key on a large wooden fob. Not ideal for fitted tailored clothes. There have to be much better self catering options-just not in this complex

    Excellent Appartments

We arrived late to the cardor holiday complex and right away the staff could not do enough to help you. The room was spotless, bed super comfy with extra bedding in the wardrobe. Cleaning staff came everyday to ask if you needed anything. Food was basic but lovely, catered to everyone. The pool areas where fantastic too. Would highly recommend and would return. Sad to go home.

•Kitchen / kitchenette area was dirty, utensils in bad shape and dirty, surfaces grubby •Bed linen stained and had hair on them when we arrived•Poor water pressure, showers leaking, bathroom curtains inadequate.•Bathrooms, toilets unclean with grime, noticeable “dirtiness” around fixtures.• Cockroaches in the bath and around the sink area• Lack of plugs sockets in the bedroom only one •Air conditioning didn't work properly •No remote for the air conditioning or the TV•No WiFi in the apartments we had to use the restaurants across the apartment• Staff are extremely rude and not helpful at all, eg: Our key was bent to enter the main door which snapped inside the key lock, so we went over to the receptionist to ask for help? He couldn't talk to me directly so I had to call my partner over and then the receptionist spoke to him and ignored me, which I find very disturbing and rude, he then proceed to get an angle grinder to open the main entrance and he just walked away, not one bit apologetic. I can listen everything about the staff in the cardor/canifor hotel, but I'll be here for weeks• Noisey neighbours, and i don't mean the guests, we were staying above a workshop and a garage, and next to a building that was getting renovatedMonday-Saturday 7am -4pm contsant banging and power tools being used AT 7AM again no one at the reception told us about this? Avoid this hotel because it is misleading and they don't care about the guests here
