    Great location

    rating23 Sept 2023

I chose this location as the pictures looked nice and the location was perfect for me. I checked in and met the manager, who is a nice old guy. His English is quite good. The roomThe room itself is on the third floor. You walk up a steep narrow staircase and pass several other rooms. My room was number 5 out of 6. It is small, but has everything you need. The bed mattress is a little hard, but I like that and my back felt good after sleeping in it for a few nights. (I have back issues). If you are taller than 6foot, your feet will touch the wall on the other side. I am 6 foot and did a few times, but it was not a problem. The bed does not have sheets or a duvet, it has a blanket that looks like a large towel – which is what you use to sleep under. This was a first for me, but it was fine. There is a small safe in the room which was handy for my camera. There is also air conditioning but when I got to the room, the remote was missing and the guy told me the AC season was over. I told him that I would need it and so he made a phone call and then came back upstairs with the remote. I thought this was a little strange. In the ad, it says AC, so I would suggest to them that they write in the listing that AC will be unavailable from certain times of the year. The weather when I was there was 30 degrees, it was quite hot. I did not use it all the time, but after I came back to the room, to cool it down etc. There is a hair dryer which is very old and when I used it, it made weird noises and I could see sparks inside it, so I did not use it again. The bathroom is adequate but needs a good clean as there is mould in quite a few places. Also dirty under the desk. One day, the manager walked into the room without knocking while I was working on my PC. I was a bit shocked and it was lucky that I was not naked after a shower. I asked him kindly to knock next time. The shower takes a few minutes to get warm water and the pressure is quite bad, but once it is on, it is ok.On the first day I had towels but they were all very small, but I got a normal sized one the next day. They have room tidying daily between 1200-1500. You get two small shower bottles and a one-litre bottle of water on your first day. These are not replenished. Some things to note:Call to prayerThe large Sultanahmet Camli mosque is very close and you can see it from the window, so you will hear the call to prayers that happen five times a day starting at 0515. This was not a problem for me, but something to be aware of. I would say that all accommodation in that area would hear it unless it has very thick windows. Most places wouldn’t.Noise from streetThere is quite a lot of noise from the street below at night and during the day. They are building next door to the hotel, so you will hear that from 0900-1700 and at night, you will hear cars beeping their horns and people returning from being out. This woke me up quite a few times, but not a big problem.AreaThere are restaurants everywhere in the area which is great and very convenient. My favourite is the AKBIYIK KEBAB HOUSE & RESTAURANT which is 50 metres away. I ate there many times. There are also taxis that drive past all day everyday, so it is easy to get to where you need to go. (make sure you agree to price first or make them use the meter - 90% of them will overcharge).I also used the metro which was super handy and easy – although you will need help getting the metro card as I did. The automatic machines are difficult. The nearest station is a 10 minute walk. You can easily walk to the water's edge from the hotel which is about 10 minutes away. That is really nice to watch the sunsets and the boats going by.There is a small grocery store at the end of the street (local) which has fruit, vegetables, drinks etc. There is a chain supermarket called Sok about a 15-minute walk away. Lots of westerners stay in this area and it is very safe – as far as I could tell.SummaryThis is obviously a very detailed review, but I would definitely recommend this place as it is in a nice area and if you will be out and about all day everyday, then it is perfect. The price is reasonable, the manager friendly, location great and pretty good wifi. Take some sleeping ear plugs with you if you are not good with outside noise.

Excellent budget oasis close to the sights

    rating12 Jun 2023

Had an excellent stay at Naz wooden house. Room 4 at the back was very spacious and clean, had a fridge and a comfortable double bed and sofa that converted into a slightly less comfortable bed (but workable by using the spare duvet as an extra cover). Bathroom was clean and all worked fine. Balcony at rear of room even provided a view of sliver of Bosphorus! :) there is a new electric rail line going in behind the hotel but it doesn’t seem to be up and running yet so heard no trains. There is a mosque not far from the rear of the hotel and the call to prayer can be a little noisy if early in morning, but for me it added to the amazing Istanbul soundscape. Budget hotel so wasn’t expecting luxury but got a friendly, clean and perfectly liveable room in a great location close to all the major Istanbul sights.

Be careful about which room you reserve

    rating14 Oct 2022

Firstly, really good service by the hotel owner who moved us to a sister hotel when we complained about the comically small room. Main advice - be sure to view any room before parting with any cash. Seems the rooms at the back of the hotel are a decent size and relatively quiet - the economy ones at the front are definitely not. Ours was laughable - double bed so tight to the window that the curtains were draped over my head - and no way to move it.
