Coasting on the Name: DO NOT Waste Your Amex Benefits Here

    rating25 Apr 2026

My first Shangri-La stay. Almost certainly my last. The room had visible mold in the shower, an aged and cracked shower mirror, and one morning reeked of cigarette smoke with no air purifier in sight. At a five-star property in 2026 in Shanghai. Embarrassing. At check-in, I was told I didn’t qualify for the upgrade booking through Amex as part of my credit card benefits, only for the same front desk clerk to immediately offer me a paid upgrade to a different room on a higher floor. So the rooms existed. The upgrade was possible. It just required my wallet. That’s not policy, that’s a hustle. If you’re planning to use your Amex benefits here, don’t. Burn them at a property that actually honors them; this isn’t the place. On departure, I had a lot of luggage which was not easily manageable. Nobody offered to help. Nobody asked how my stay was. Just a deposit refund and a “K, bye.” At the Shangri-La.Breakfast staff were already short and annoyed before the restaurant had served a single guest. It opened literally 30 seconds prior to me walking in. Afternoon tea was the one bright spot, but only because of the lovely women working it. They were so kind, attentive, and really tried to make it a beautiful experience despite the hard product failing to deliver a great experience. The food was dated, overly sweet, and worse than teas I’ve had at no-name establishments, including one in a mall in the middle of Bangkok. Warm scones and polite staff can’t carry a whole service especially one for CNY 569!The Kerry Centre attachment is convenient. That’s the entire pro column.Don’t book on the strength of the name. The badge is doing all the work, and there’s nothing underneath it.

Not bad but also not good

Nothing really negative or positive to say. Booked through Amex FHR, which was never acknowledged although benefits were explained. There was no mention of room upgrade, but when I inquired, they informed me that the room type I had booked was not eligible. They even displayed the upgraded room options on their screen, just to clarify, I didn't push the matter they showed it me voluntarily. There are 2 types of standard rooms deluxe and premier. I booked the premier which was the only one available and that was considered the upgradable room. They have club rooms but they won't upgrade to them unless you book a club room. They did give us a high floor corner room which was nice. For some reason the only electrical outlet is on one side of the bed. There's another one at the desk but it's inconvenient. I called to front desk to ask if there was another one any in room, but they had a hard time understanding my question, which brings up another issue. English is not a strong point at this hotel and communication at times can be a bit frustrating.Breakfast was disappointing, if it wasn't included in the rate i would've skipped it. Variety is there but everything just tasted bland.Location is convenient and pretty easy to get around. We stayed at the Jing-An Shangri-La in Shanghai for 4 nights ahead of a cruise. We booked the Horizon Club, Executive Room. The room was beautiful and we really enjoyed it. The hotel staff were amazing and they went out of their way to accommodate anything that we needed. This was the 2nd time we have stayed at his hotel chain and we would definitely stay at there hotels around the world again. 5 Star! Stunning

    rating22 Nov 2025

Was there on my 24 hrs off from business meetings. Wanted to stay in the cool area where I can walk to French Concession and Bund (that is a bit far of a walk but doable). The hotel is lux - as also indicative of a crowd. Located in Jing An area, that is upscale shopping area (akin to Madison Ave in NYC). Hotel is gorgeous, offering amazing views of beautiful Shanghai. Room is comfortable with all the amenities (no Japanese toilet, unfortunately). Breakfast is plentiful. Service is impeccable. Hotel is an easy walk to French Concession, down the street from a fancy mall with really good dim sum. Hotel has a nice restaurant and bar on the 4rth floor. Bund district is either an hour walk or a 20 min taxi ride. Airport is about an hour. Traffic in Shanghai is insane so plan accordingly. Take a ride up one of the multitude of towers in Bund district to appreciate the views. And have a red rice wine latte in one of the cute coffee shops. Great place to visit
