Tired and outdated, disappointingly missing a great opportunity to have a great hotel.

    rating03 Sept 2024

OK, so we just returned form 2 weeks in Kusadasi , staying in the Golden Moon Apart Hotel.Family of 4 - parents and kids (19 and 14). Overall we had a great holiday , but I'm writing our first review to give a heads up for anyone else going. It's 2 star , we knew that , and I've been travelling to Turkey since 1985 so I know what to expect. We knew about the charge for air con at 5 euros per night so won't criticise that ( though the machine itself was pretty old and struggled to cool the entire apartment as its in the kitchen/living area - so cold at night in that area , hot in the bedrooms). Other reviews said tired , basic but clean. Yes it was very clean when we entered the apartment and the square footage is good. But, to call it self catering is a stretch. The "kitchen" area had a 2 ring electric table top cooker which took ages to heat up and had some suspicious red tape around part of the flex. There were only 2 mugs and 2 small coffee cups (family of 4) , 4 different glasses and a small variety of cutlery. Chopping board was wooden and covered in pan burn marks, Plates and bowls were old white plastic. Wouldn't take much to update all of it.Beds were a variety of types. We had requested a double in the main bedroom but had 2 singles. We decided not to bother commenting. Mattresses were the firmest I've ever slept on so be prepared. In the small "bedroom" was a single with a slightly less firm mattress and in the lounge area a fold out sofa bed which was OK for my 14 year old but had a gap down middle where the back rest and seat cushions met. TV was non serviceable (not that we cared) but was positioned about 8 feet away from the aerial socket and power which would mean moving it to the entrance of the small bedroom.Take it out! Also, the small table in the lounge are only had 2 bendy plastic chairs - not easy for a family of 4. Coffee table was wobbly - really wobbly. Not critical but annoying.Bathroom was tired and scrappy. The sink tap had a couple of tiny holes in the tap pipe which sprayed a tiny jet of water sideways whenever you turned it on.Messy for your make up etc. General water pressure ok though.Plenty of hot water. Shower head was split and very cheap plastic so again sprayed 50% of the water sideways and couldn't really be attached to wall. It eventually completely gave up and leaked from all over the place so I undid it and took it to reception where the nice lady happened to have a new one in the back office , so I took that , unpackaged it, and fixed it myself.Behind the bathroom door there was once a rubber stopper in the floor but this had obviously broken a long time ago as all that was left now was a rusty 15mm spike sticking up out of the floor just waiting for a small child to step on it. Mentioned this to the rep who told the office but nothing was done during our stay. Door handle came off on the inside a couple of times. The swimming pool is good and if you want to just stay there all day and tan then you are OK. Loungers had towels on them as mentioned in other reviews so hard to get and you have to pay for thin mattresses for them if you want. I found bar prices steep - 1 Efes , 1 Desperado beer and 1 Coke £10 , so we chose not to spend anything in the hotel. We like to eat out ( genuine Turkish food - not Brits abroad food) and explore a location, so we went out every day and every evening just returning to go to our room and sleep/ change/shower. In the morning I would go out and buy bread from the local bakery , veg and cheese etc and other items from the local sellers or very close supermarkets. So gradually , the owners and their sons or employees (not sure which) stopped being chatty and friendly and would simply nod as we went or returned. This showed their mindset. If we asked for information then we got it , but otherwise nothing else. Some great cheap eateries round the back streets (Yildirim Cadesi) and very friendly. Nice walk down the hill at the back to the town centre (catch a taxi back). So , overall , this place is very tired , nobody seems that motivated to update it or decorate the rooms carefully (see photos) and is basic in the true sense but clean. The guys who might be the sons could be renovating the place but instead don't seem to do much. Disappointing as it makes the holiday tiring when the beds are uncomfortable and the facilities run down or meagre , but you get what you pay for and it was very cheap (£365 each for 2 weeks ) . Would we go there again ? Sadly , no. Went with Jet2 so maybe they need to check a little closer as to the standards and give advice regarding updating.

Basic but clean, need more sunbeds!

    rating20 Aug 2024

2 star so wasn't expecting an awful lot. The hotel was basic but clean. Room cleaned and towels changed every other day. We were on 6th floor and view to back of hotel. Large group(s) of Danish guests and literally took over the whole bar and pool area. So much so we had to pay for taxis to star beach and use the sunbeds there every day.. Bar man and lads very nice. Owner and wife day in reception every day selling all the stuff that gets left as guests leave. Reception area could do with spruce up but owner not boredthered because he trying to sell the place. Had power cut in building one night after coming back from beach at 6pm, no shower as pumps to feed water didn't work or anything else. Was told would be back on within half hour but over hour later still not on again. Had to go out to eat grubby and sweaty from beach all day and return late to be told power didn't come back on til around 11pm! The hill down to the centrum was steep but OK going down but we didn't venture back up again, used taxi instead.

    Clean but run down

    rating16 Aug 2024

I was in 2 minds about writing this review as was made aware whilst there the owner is not bothered about bad reviews due to selling up after season for student accommodation. However here is my honest review:I am no stranger to cheap and cheerful hotels and do not let them ruin my holiday, to some extent you do get what you pay for, but some aspects of this hotel took the biscuit. The rooms are spacious and clean, however there are parts that make it look dirty as they are completely run down and in need of repair. The shower head was that rusty the head could not be moved and the water did not come out all the holes, the basin of the shower had at some point been painted to clean it up but has now started flaking away making it look gruby. The kitchen is not set up for self catering if you intend to cook and not eat out, there are only 2 full size plates and no proper cups (you are provided with a pack of paper cups). There is no toaster or sandwich maker, and the 2 ring cooker tripped our electrics which is when we noticed the wires of it had been cut in numerous places and taped back together (pics included). This hotel is frequented by regular customers consisting of large groups of Irish families. These families obviously have a relationship with the bar staff, and unless you intend to get up at 5am you will not get a sunbed. I witnessed one morning the bar staff doing it for them. What's more frustrating is these families are out till the early hours so only come down to the pool at earliest 3pm. When these families do come out they take over the whole pool and do not keep there teenage kids in check, they let their kids kick balls from one end of the pool to the other purposely aiming for peoples heads. I have kids myself so all for them having fun in the pool, but these were not pool balls they were heavy footballs and regularly hit or came close to hitting people, myself being one of them. There are not enough sunloungers for the hotel and half of what they do have are unusable due to having large cracks/holes down the middle. One thing that I have not had in any cheap and cheerful hotels before is they want to charge 30tl per person per day for the mats to put on the sun lounger, the pool table is 150tl per hour, the air hockey etc is also chargeable but unsure what the cost of that was.One thing I will say is the owners in particular the old lady seem to have bad reviews, this was not my experience. The old lady although speaks limited English greeted me with a smile and good morning every day, as did the lady on reception. The manager on reception although at times stern looking was very efficient, and helpful. We had a kettle full of limescale, he got us a new one straight away. We requested extra pillows which were given, and the bed sheet when we arrived was scratchy and stiff so we requested a cotton sheet instead, which we also got. The bar staff our polite but beyond that even though we tried they only interact with each other or the regular customers. We ate at the hotel a few times and the cost was reasonable. My partner said the breakfast was the best he had with proper sausages. The drinks at the bar are the same as when out and the alcohol content is good, if it isn't strong enough they are happy to put more in if you let them know. The annoying thing is nothing is on draught but that seemed to be the same in most places. So if you wanted a Malibu and coke, you are charged 180tl for the Malibu and 90tl for the can of coke. Same if you want a shandy you would get a bottle of whatever larger you ordered then have to pay for a can of sprite.Overall like I said this review is just for anyone looking last minute before they close, there are better cheap and cheerful hotels out there for instance we previously stayed at the Tuntas which could also do with modernising but the pool is bigger and equipped with enough sunloungers.

    Cheap but definitely not cheerful

    rating26 Jul 2024

This place is as grim as it is cheap. If you’re hoping for cheap and cheerful then forget it. It’s falling apart and I don’t think there has been a penny spent in maintaining this property in years. It may have been ok back in the 1980s but it really isn’t acceptable in this day and age. Staff are ok, neither friendly nor rude. Food is very average and overpriced. The only positive I would say is that the location is good, only a few minutes walk, downhill, to the Centrum. I honestly can’t believe that people wilfully return here.
