It’s not a four star experience

    rating22 Jun 2026

The hotel is nice, it’s reasonably clean and well kept and the staff are friendly, however I wouldn’t call it a 4 star hotel. Whilst things were clean, they didn’t seem entirely looked after. The showers was clean, but there was evidence of mildew and ‘dirt’ in the grout, things I would not expect in a hotel advertising themselves as 4 stars, the cover for the pipe connection to the wall was also loose and exposed. The rooms was clean and somewhat well kept, there were visible stains in the carpet, and the wardrobe was damaged at the bottom, as if someone had tried to get in it. Other things I found odd was that I couldn’t have the floor lamp on without the ‘big light’ being on, and that ‘conditioning shampoo’, hand soap, and moisturiser were available but not body wash, when I enquired with reception they confirmed that they do not include it, (I would probably choose body wash over moisturiser). The breakfast was decent, there was lots of choice but the quality was mediocre. The water provided in the room was at first the bottled water provided in the bar, it was then restocked with Costco ‘Kirkland’ branded bottled water. Overall a decent stay, and would have been happy had I booked a 3 star hotel.

Good position, adequate accommodation but disappointing service.

    rating12 Jun 2026

I needed to book for a group of 21 provisionally, only confirming a few weeks before the date without penalty. One hotel wanted a huge deposit and another would charge graduated cancellation fees from the start (four months before the date). The booking process at the Clayton was seamless and very easy and the price competitive as this was holiday season. However after that the service levels were very variable. Reception is always busy and not always adequately staffed. The knowledge of the staff is variable. Depending on when you go to,breakfast it can be very busy. It is all self service and we were happy with the selection and the buffet was refilled promptly. Housekeeping is overwhelmed. Of the three days our room was only serviced on time once. On the other two days we had to ask as it hadn’t been serviced by 3.30. “Very busy” is not the guests problem. Our room was adequate while plenty of hangers, no drawers and only one shelf. Lots of plugs and usb charging points and nice bathroom, again with minimal storage space.Other service is poor. There was often only one person in the bar and friends had to wait for a drink (or coffee) and remind them several times. We had a good evening meal in the restaurant but again the service was haphazard with frequent reminders for water and coffee. The position is very central and the hotel is quiet.

    Sweaty and Naked

    rating01 Jun 2026

This hotel seems determined to occupy a fascinating niche in the hospitality market: charging premium prices while delivering the experience of a budget chain having an off day.Our troubles began before we even arrived. Apparently, the room we'd booked did not include bathrobes or slippers. This was not obvious when booking, and when we asked for some, we were told we could buy them, except there weren't any available to buy. Impressive. I've stayed in countless hotels, and this is the first time I've encountered a "luxury" property where robes appear to be a mythical creature. The room itself came with air conditioning, which sounds wonderful until you discover it automatically switches itself off at midnight. As we were staying during summer, this created a delightful nightly game: stay awake until midnight to reactivate it, or wake up sweating at 3am and do it then. The room also lacked a fridge, another detail that wasn't highlighted during booking. Normally this would be manageable, except the ice machine (the only source of anything remotely cold) was broken throughout our stay. The result was a masterclass in discomfort: warm room, warm drinks, warm tempers. To compensate, we were "upgraded" to a room with three beds. Unless the hotel thought we were expecting surprise guests, I'm not entirely sure why. I'd gladly have traded the extra bed for a robe, a fridge, or functioning climate control.Housekeeping provided another memorable experience. Our room wasn't cleaned on the first day, and when we returned at 5pm, we were informed that staff had simply been too busy. We asked whether cleaning could be done after 7pm, but apparently this was impossible. Instead, staff arrived while we were showering: an awkward situation made even better by the complete absence of robes. The following morning, I was informed that the room not being cleaned was actually my fault because we'd turned housekeeping away at 6:30pm the previous evening. It's rare to see customer service so confidently redefine reality.Breakfast was included in the price, although after a couple of visits we stopped attending voluntarily. The eggs in particular were memorable for all the wrong reasons. The sole bright spot was a new waiter who was friendly, professional, and seemed to be operating under a belief not held by the rest of the staff that guests should be treated well. The most frustrating part is that the location is fantastic. Unfortunately, that's about the only thing this hotel has going for it. Next time I'd happily stay at the Grand up the road or even a Travelodge. One may be less expensive and the other more expensive, but at least with both you know what you're getting. Here, the greatest luxury on offer appears to be lowered expectations.

    Bristol Bolthole

    rating25 May 2026

During a visit to Bristol we stayed one night here. Supposed to be a deluxe/premium room but I'm not sure about that!? We were in an accessible room on the 6th floor which seemed a bit odd! That said the room was pleasant - bed a bit on the small side, huge bathroom and it was very quiet. We only had a drink in the bar as we had a dinner reservation elsewhere. Very handily located for central Bristol and reasonably rpiced too

    Decent city centre choice

    rating11 May 2026

Behind the fabulous Art Noveau front, Clayton is a large modern hotel. Great location, close to city centre, with large, comfortable if slightly anonymous rooms. A good stay, but a few minor quibbles. The staff were friendly and efficient, but don't seem to see any special requests made when booking. The shower was hot enough, but strangely the basin taps never seem to get beyond mildly warm. Breakfast is extensive, but could be better run. For example, there are no fried eggs unless specially ordered, and whilst it's good to see both vegetarian and standard sausages, it would be helpful if they were labeled as such. Nonetheless, one of my regular choices when in Bristol
