    never ever again

    rating08 Jun 2026

The location is the only positive thing I can say about this hotel. It's close to the castle and within walking distance of the pubs and clubs. Now for the rest.We booked this stay for my wife's birthday and paid extra to upgrade to a "premium" room. If room 214 is considered premium, I'd hate to see what the standard rooms look like. After checking in, we were sent up in what felt like a very questionable lift. When we got to the room, we were genuinely shocked. The carpet had large red stains that looked like blood, there was mould throughout the bathroom, and the whole room felt like it hadn't been updated since the 1950s.The condition of the room was so bad that we checked in, went to the room, and then checked straight back out. A manager came to inspect the room and, when shown the stains, told us he wasn't sure whether they were blood or not. We were also informed that some rooms are due to be renovated soon, which says a lot about the current state of the hotel.Despite leaving immediately, the hotel is refusing to provide a refund. If you're planning a trip to Cardiff, save your money and stay elsewhere. There are plenty of much better options in the city. In fact, you'd probably have a more enjoyable stay sleeping in the doorway of Burger King – at least it's sheltered if it rains. Sad relic

    rating07 Jun 2026

There's a special place in hell reserved for people who give old distinguished hotels a 21st-century makeover. It's usually done on the cheap, dates quickly and ends up looking tired and scabby. This place once hosted film stars and prime ministers - presumably The Angel felt the need to compete with all the Marriots and Holiday Inns springing up, and they really shouldn't have. I was rather hoping for a bit of charm and faded grandeur, still there in isolated places, but the place was "refurbished in 2000" so the overall vibe is pure B&M-Bargains, and cheap bathroom fittings not helped by chipboard panelling and badly-applied silicone filler which the intervening quarter-century's worth of overflowing baths wasn't going to be kind to. The restaurant and bar area, once apparently quite grand, is rather grim with the usual dull and formulaic menu. The hotel's exterior is disgraceful on the castle side, like Crack City in places. Still, the staff were nice, the room was big, and the location's great. As always, you get what you pay for, and I didn't pay very much. Angel Management, Guest Services / Front Office at The Angel Hotel, responded to this review Dear Paul,Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay and sorry for any disappointment.Kind Regards,Utkarsha ChauhanOperations Manager

    Very bad service

    rating05 Jun 2026

The hotel was booked and warned of the presence of a dog. This seemed not to be registered. A prebooking of 100 pounds for damages was taken but no description of existing damages was taken. The actual decision of damages could only be decided upon after 11 am (end of the cleaning service). This means I had to leave without any news on the refund of 100pounds.Although the hotel advertises having their own parking, this isn't true anymore. They send you to the NCP parking, with very narrow bendings and narrow parking spaces and with a municipal warning of active thieves. The carpark doesn't register foreign numbers, thus when you leave earlier than the 24 h, you still pay the 32 pounds for 24 h. Why they do not recommend the guarded parking in front of the hotel at the 24 h rate of 20 pounds and with spacious places is incomprehensible.Although they offer roomservice the kitchen closes at 8.30 pm. I had to take refuge to buy sandwiches in a supermarket because the dog wasn' t accepted in the restaurants in the neigbourhood.Reception personell not friendly and welcoming: they don't give the impression to love their job.Lift very narrow and slow.On saterday noise (and alarms) from the festive people till midnight. Angel Management, Guest Services / Front Office at The Angel Hotel, responded to this review Dear Guest,Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay with us. We are really sorry for your disappointment and please accept our apologies for the inconvenience. We are pet friendly hotel and we take £100.00 pre authorisation not as a Sale. also we do not advertise car parking anywhere so this seems you have been mislead as we do not have car parking since last two years.Kind Regards,Utkarsha ChauhanOperations Manager

    Angel hotel ub40 concert stay.

I’ve stayed at the hotel multiple times before when visiting Cardiff, it’s central to the city centre, right opposite Cardiff castle and literally 100 yards ish from the stadium. An old building, but full of warmth and charm. Lovely lobby area, full of bright chandeliers, with a dual aspect stairway. ( there is a small lift to upper floors. A small mobility scooter or wheelchair would fit in my opinion). The restaurant (I had breakfast on both days) full Welsh.Piping hot and plenty of it, all freshly cooked.Cereals, fresh juice, teas, coffee, toast and jams all available. Service was quiet and considerate, nothing was too much trouble. We had a suite upon the third floor( bit extra room with a sofa , and a small table) I appreciate a little more room.Comfy bed, with fluffy pillows and crisp linens. I slept like a baby.Bath with shower over, plenty of hot water and fresh towels, if anything is required the house keeping team where there to help.Although the hotel is of an age, I enjoy its quirks, its character , it makes me feel at home.Easy access to the city centre, oh but the car park that was available behind the hotel is no more! So we used a ncp at the end of west gate street, costs are £32 for 24 hours so budget for it. Reception staff, maintenance staff, and house keeping staff are a hoot, lovely bunch, always smiling and helpful. Keep it up 👍. Just to note there are steps from the street up into reception. I do not know if there is a ramp or lift for wheelchair access. Suggest phoning in advance. Angel Management, Guest Services / Front Office at The Angel Hotel, responded to this review Dear Guest,Your feedback means a lot to us, and we're grateful for your support. We hope to welcome you back soon for another memorable stay.Kind Regards,Utkarsha ChauhanOperations Manager
