    Summer Break

    rating06 Jun 2026

This is a really tough review to write as I have stayed here several times and loved it. However this time the whole experience felt far from 5 star. I have to say all of the staff were lovely, helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room had a strong damp smell in the corner by the wardrobe and was quite dirty - I did take photos of headboard - full of dust , bottom of the wardrobe - full of dust and behind the TV awful . I didnt raise any of these during our stay as the hotel was full so we had no options to move. Our room was tiny for £400 per night and did have a sea view if you stuck you neck out of the window. Our room felt like it was only used when no other options were available. The carpet on the main stairs was worn away to the weave in the middle -not a 5 star hotel in my view. Yes it is convenient for town but in future I think we will look elsewhere. Sorry its negative but I feel as if I must be truthful but please look at my previous review to compare

Excellent hotel with history and location in abundance

    rating03 Jun 2026

Lovely old hotel , packed with history and in a great location.Food on the first night was really good but a little pricey , breakfast was also good on the first morning , however breakfast on the second morning was very much not up to standard , when the waitress removed my half eaten plate she asked if it was good , I replied just OK , and she smiled and removed my plate , was she listening , I don't think so . apart from that the staff were really professional , almost faultless . Room was ok , but very small but everything we needed Andrew Chantrell, General Manager at The Old Government House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review Dear E9DEB,Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback following your recent stay at The OGH in Guernsey.I am happy that you liked the hotel and enjoyed the history and location. I was sorry though to learn that, although breakfast on the first morning was good, the same could not be said of the second. I have shared your feedback with the team to ensure that our normally high standards are upheld at all times. It is all the more disappointing as this is an area where we normally receive very good comments. I am happy that, with that one exception, my team were professional.I have taken your comments on board and would like to assure you that steps will be taken to remedy any lapses in training or standards and I hope that this will not deter you from visiting us again.Kind regards,Andrew Chantrell, General Manager

Old Government House Guernsey has a special touch of tradition and excellent customer service

    rating01 Jun 2026

From start to finish of your stay you will be treated the most delightful welcome and excellent service levels If you are travelling with a car the valet service will park it for you in their hotel car park Your car is available to you through out the day on request from reception by the valet service. No charge is applied for this service.Rooms are tastefully decorated in the style that you would expect from a five star establishment The hotel is situated on a hillside from which you can view excellent views over St Peter PortThe hotel has various restaurants and bars to choose from. the Brasserie offers daily meal service from breakfast until including a dinner service in the evening. The hotel also has an Indian restaurant which has a usual six tables in a small cosy room. Booking a table is advised as the food is prepared and served to a highly desirable taste sensation. To sum up if you are looking for something special and exceptional service look no further.A special mention from myself and I go out to an excellent member of the restaurant team. Pamela is an asset to this hotel. She has a great talent of delivering a great customer service. She was a delight to speak with and deserves a mention. Superb hotel and staff!

    rating28 May 2026

We had a superb stay at the Old Government Hotel and a special THANK YOU to Kris for all your help and organisation before we'd even arrived! The service we received from every member of staff throughout our stay was the best we’ve ever experienced. They couldn't do enough for you and were so friendly and kind.Breakfast was incredible, such a fantastic array of hot and cold food, either cooked to order or buffet style continental breakfast. Our room - on the second floor - was massive and so quiet. The bed was also huge, and SO comfy! We slept really well and nice to have a 'pillow menu'!And such a selection of teas, coffees and hot chocolate in the room. They have UHT milk as standard, but you can call room service to have fresh milk.Of course, we just HAD to test out the (heated) swimming pool. It was just perfect. We would have liked to have tried the whirlpools, but they were closed for cleaning. The hotel is in a central location, it takes about 3 minutes to walk into the High Street (downhill)! A bit more legwork required to get back to the hotel, quite a few steep roads to get back!I spotted a brilliant Travelzoo offer at this fabulous hotel, this is somewhere I had wanted to visit for SO long. As part of the deal, we enjoyed the two delicious meals in the hotel, one in the Brasserie restaurant, and the other in the Curry House.Just a word of warning - We were a little surprised at the drinks bill plus service charge and also when we checked out, there was a £10.00 per night for the room on the invoice. We weren't offered tap water when dining in the Curry House on our first night, but thought paying £6.00 for a bottle of still water was a little steep (the same bottles of water are handed out free in your room).I do appreciate we could have refused the service charge but feel it may have seemed a bit rude. Especially as the service and our stay was so amazing.I just wanted to mention it in case others are contemplating taking advantage of the Travelzoo deal, just be prepared to spend a little more. The additional costs probably added an additional £65.00-£75.00 on the overall holiday. However, we had a fantastic stay and we would love to visit again. Andrew Chantrell, General Manager at The Old Government House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review Dear gemlou3,Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback following your recent stay at The OGH. I am delighted that you had a memorable time with us and that you enjoyed your first visit to the Island and the hotel. It is wonderful to hear that my team looked after you well and that you found them to be friendly and kind. It will be my pleasure to share your kind words with them and I know that they will be happy that their efforts have been so appreciated.I am sorry that you were disappointed by the service charge and the drinks bill. The service charge is discretionary and the team would never be offended by being asked to remove it so I am sorry that you felt that this was not something that you felt comfortable doing. I am concerned that you were not offered tap water in The Curry Room as this is certainly something that we always offer and have no problem serving when requested. I have spoken to our Curry Room team to ensure that this is not omitted in future.Thank you again for taking the time to offer feedback and I am happy that you would like to return. We all look forward to welcoming you back as and when your travel plans mean a return to Guernsey.Kind regards,Andrew Chantrell, General Manager

Beautiful old style building with friendly staff but occasional blips in service

    rating23 Apr 2026

Beautiful hotel with old world charm. Some excellent members of staff but on occasions we had to wait a long time for service. Two nights running we had 45 minute wait for drinks before dinner. It may be because the start of the season so new staff, but with £10 per day extra tip per room plus service charge for food and drinks it did fall short on several occasions including forgetting towels in the room, replacing water with already opened bottles and getting a couple of orders wrong on food. Nothing that couldn't be easily resolved but with the additional service charges it felt like they set themselves up for exemplary service which sometimes fell short. Central location with lovely views though be warned it's up one of the many steep hills so those struggling with mobility might find access hard at times. Andrew Chantrell, General Manager at The Old Government House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review Dear C9863LEkeithm,Thank you for taking the time to share feedback following your recent stay with us at The OGH.I am pleased to learn that you enjoyed a good stay with us in the main, particularly in respect of the warmth of service and the lovely vantage point overlooking the town.  However, I am sorry that you felt that service was a little inconsistent, both in terms of the room amenities being replaced and service delays in the bar throughout your stay.  I appreciate that you have brought these points to my attention, not by way of criticism, but to provide feedback that will allow us to continue to maintain and improve upon the high level of service and attention to detail we strive to offer our guests. Please rest assured that I will be discussing this with our team to ensure that these standards are practiced rigorously at all times.Thank you for your thoughts on our discretionary service charge.  Like many four and five-star hotels around the world, we took a decision some years ago to introduce a discretionary daily service charge of £10 per day which is added to the final bill.  Although reference is made to the daily service charge in our letters of confirmation and Reception staff should also be advising guests of this practice on check-in, I am sorry if this was not explained to you and again will be speaking to our Front of House team to ensure that these procedures are carried out at all times.Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback with us and I hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Guernsey and The OGH so that we can demonstrate that we listen and take action.Kind regards,Andrew Chantrell, General Manager
