A night spent in the Abbey Bed and Breakfast in Derry
23 Feb 2026
My brother and I spent a night in this very nice and friendly Bed and Breakfast on Saturday 21st February and it was a very pleasant experience. The room was spotlessly clean and all conveniences were available to us. I would recommend this bed and breakfast highly to my friends and family. It is in a very central location in Derry City and the breakfast was very nice too.

Rude guests & uncaring owner
17 Nov 2025
TL;DR: do not stay here. The owner doesn’t care what goes on inside the B&B. My stay was awful. At 9PM, some gentlemen came into the sitting area and were conversing loudly. Only 9, so not an issue yet. Over the next 3 hours I asked them 3 separate times if they could quiet down so we could sleep. I was met with either indifference or outright hostility.Around 12AM, the front door is slammed 5+ times over 10 minutes with these men going in and out of the building. Soon after, I’m delighted to piece together that these men are staying in the room directly above mine. Certain noises are coming from their beds for the next 30min (absolutely everything, especially the beds, creak here). Around 1 it did quiet down.At 2:30, one of them was outside without a key. He rings the doorbell (it was a Ring that called the owner), yells, and pounds on all exterior doors. Finally he comes back to the front door (adjacent to my window) and knocks on our window while screaming. My wife is now woken up and scared. The owner finally lets him in.One of the worst parts? The owner blamed us for not asking for a “quiet room” and said he has no responsibility for the conduct of his guests. He also called these men “fine Scottish gentlemen” as if that excuses their actions. He refused to issue any kind of remedy nor take any responsibility for what happens on his property. This place was a nightmare for someone wanting to stay at a BED and breakfast to sleep.P.S. The hot water didn’t work.
Seamus Kennedy, General Manager at Abbey Bed and Breakfast, responded to this review
Sorry for late reply to this review, i was in Dublin picking up an All Ireland silver medal for service in Irish language at Abbey Bed and Breakfast. We have been waiting for your review this past 3 months as all staff at the Abbey remember this couple of opportunists. I could copy an email they sent to us on the day they both checked out which started by saying: "We enjoyed the facilities and breakfast, but......?" before they went on a very long detailed account of the behavoir of guests from Scotland who were here to enjoy themselves; yes and we know these people as they are regular guests who come to enjoy Irish hospitality and the craic as we call it. It was a Saturday evening and guests are allowed to use the lounge area until 11 PM, and Amy and Patrick happened to be in room 1 which is on the ground floor at the entrance. They complained first when a guy was singing the song "Danny Boy" at 9.30 PM; and continued to complain afterwards even though this party kept their conversation down until they retired at midnight. It was unfortunate the one guy who did knock loud on the door later as he was under the influence when i helped him to his bed. The house was quiet after this. We are 25 years in hospitality and our motto is always; "TREAT PEOPLE THEY WAY YOU WISH TO BE TREATED YOURSELF AND DON'T SUFFER FOOLS GLADLY". Amy and Patrick were looking for a full refund by email before they decided to post reviews on Expedia and Tripadvisor. I did not apologize to them because of how they thought it okay to tell a large group of people to be quiet when they had assured me they were only having a chat and singing a few songs before retiring. I was in the Kitchen and they were happy and certainly not too loud. Incidentally we had a wonderful group of NYC firemen a few weeks ago who loved the fact they could enjoy a singsong while they stayed, so it is not a nationality thing it called being human. Some people are still capable of enjoying their holidays while minding their own business of what other people are doing on their holidays, which this couple failed to do. The breakfast girls also did not owe either Patrick or Amy an apology because 25 years of experience has taught us how to handle situations. That is all i can say about this over reaction from a couple demanding a full refund because of something that is nothing to do with Abbey facilities or the management.
