    Save Your Receipts!

    rating22 May 2026

We recently stayed at Norton House 1-3 May as part of an organized CIE tour. While the hotel and accommodations were quite nice, the bar at the hotel is incredibly dishonest when billing guests. We were at the bar the last night, I had two scotches (standard 12 yr) and one for our tour guide. The bill should have be no more than ~£40, but when I saw my statement, I was charged $198.26 (~£148). I recall the bartender that evening asking where others in my party were (perhaps they adjourned for the night without paying), I told him I wasn’t sure. I made the mistake of not getting a receipt for my drinks. When I saw my statement after leaving Scotland, I saw the $198 bill, apparently the bartender just decided to tag me with everyone else’s bar bills. I wasn’t the only one however they did this too. Friends of ours ordered two items for a total of £10, but were charged £151.67 when he reviewed his statement, so apparently I was not the only victim of their practice of having bar patrons pay others’ bills. He did however keep his receipts for he may have some luck in recovering his overcharge, I stupidly did not, so I will likely not. The hotel is nice and other than this pattern of overcharging bar patrons, enjoyed my stay. Don’t make the mistake I made…keep your receipts! Iona Oliver, Guest Services / Front Office at Norton House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your recent stay with us.I am very sorry to read your comments regarding the bar charges on your account. This is certainly not the standard of service or billing accuracy we aim to provide, and I appreciate how concerning this must have been, particularly after returning home.I would welcome the opportunity to investigate this matter further for you. Please could you contact me directly at ioliver@handpicked.co.uk with your stay details and any information you may have regarding the transaction. I will personally review the charges with our team and look into what may have occurred.Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Iona Oliver, Guest Services / Front Office at Norton House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.I am sorry to read that our pet-friendly environment was not to your liking. Norton House Hotel & Spa welcomes dogs in designated public areas and many of our guests choose to travel with their pets. We appreciate that this may not suit everyone's preferences, and we are sorry if this impacted your enjoyment of your visit. We take cleanliness and hygiene standards very seriously, and all public areas are regularly monitored and maintained by our team. We also have designated spaces within the hotel for guests dining without pets, and our team would always be happy to assist with seating preferences wherever possible.I am sorry that you felt disappointed during your visit, but I appreciate you sharing your experience as guest feedback helps us continually review and improve our service.Kind regards,Iona OliverFront Office Manager
