Fab location and value for money

Stayed here recently with friends before a girlie night out.... Lovely place, great location and good value for money. Would definately recommend and would have no hesitation booking these apartments again.

    Pot Luck

These apartments appear to be a bit of a lottery. The one we stayed at - No.10 James Court - was a little rough around the edges, but it was clean and offered one of the best locations in Edinburgh for a mere £25 per head, based on a family of four. The WiFi was fine and although the owner warned about the plumbing, we didn't have any problems waiting for hot water. This apartment is ideal for budget travellers and backpackers, with a fully equipped kitchen. The sitting room offers a great view of Lawnmarket and you'll either love or hate the constant noise of people and bagpipes. The double bedroom at the back is much quieter and the bed was very comfortable. The curtains are too thin, so bring a nightshade. I also thought the bedding was a little sparse for the two sofa beds.Older travellers and those with very young children should be aware that it's a long walk up several flights of a winding stone staircase. In a nutshell, I'd happily go again because the location and price were very good. My wife wouldn't, as she thinks that carpet stains and cheap-looking decor are more important than a prime location. However, she did concede that the apartment was clean and wouldn't have minded it when she was younger.

    Great Location, Great Value

I'm a little confused on where some of the other reviewers stayed. Some of the reviews were definately not at the Castle Apartments that we stayed at. My wife and I had an apartment on Lawnmarket. It was one of the apartments on the top floor. It has a stone, spiral staircase with a rope handrail on the last spiral. Our apartment was very clean, and well furnished (dated but in good condition). We had a full kitchen, which was very handy. Since there was no grocery store close by, the desk attendant went shopping for us. That was very nice of him! The windows at one end of the apartment overlooked the Royal Mile, and the back bedroom window faced the park. It was a great location! We never needed a car. The Castle, museum, art gallery, restaurants, and other attractions were all within walking distance. It was everything we needed (we didn't need a spa, room service, or a furnished breakfast). We thought the price was quite reasonable also. We would definately stay here again.

I recently went on a college trip to Edinburgh, arriving at the hostel on the 20th January and departing on the morning of the 22nd. There was a group of around 36 students staying at the hostel on Queen Street, in a total of 4 rooms. Personally, I stayed in Room 2, a room that accommodated 9 people altogether. On arrival at the hostel, we were checked in and given keys to our room. We were given 2 sets of keys between 9 people, which was not enough. When we went up to the room, we were greeted with a freezing cold, cobbled together space, with one working ceiling light. On further investigation, the carpet and rug were absolutely filthy, strewn with dust and general small bits of rubbish and hairs, making it obvious the floor had not been hoovered in what looked like weeks. There were 4 bunk beds and one single bed, none of them matching. The two wooden bunk beds we were provided with rocked significantly from side to side when someone climbed onto the top bunk, making them potentially unsafe to sleep in. The mattresses were uncomfortable, and the bed frames themselves were too short for anyone over the height of 5 foot 8. The space between the frame of the top bunk and the bottom was so small you could not sit on the bottom bunk, therefore we could only use the beds for sleeping. The other two bunk beds were metal, one with a double bed underneath and a single on top, and the other two singles. These beds were of slightly better quality, however they were still very uncomfortable and the double bunk's mattress was sinking due to the slats holding it up not being strong enough to hold the weight of two people. The ladder on one of the bunk beds was not screwed onto the bed, meaning if you tried to climb up it it would come off and could have potentially caused an accident. Although the bedding was clean, the duvet covers did not fit the duvets, exposing dirty, bobbly duvets that smelt of damp. We were only provided with one very poor quality pillow on each bunk, making it even more difficult to sleep. The bathroom was modern and bright, however there was a large hole in the ceiling, large enough that someone could even climb through it, and it brought in a very chilly draft, directly above your head when you were in the shower. The shower itself was difficult to operate, and took a long time to heat up, and it was covered in limescale, as well as the drain being blocked with hairs and other waste. The sink was the same, with limescale and a blocked drain. The toilet, when you sat on it, would feel like it was going to come off the wall, and on further inspection it was indeed not attached properly. We were provided with two tiny, grey (supposed to be white) towels, however towels were available for rent from reception. We were given two rolls of toilet roll to last 9 people 3 days. The curtains in the room weren't attached to the rails properly, and were hanging off, and with one pull would've come down completely. Staying in Scotland in January is already a risk with the cold weather, and we were provided with one tiny heater, that liked to turn off whenever it wanted to, and made an extremely loud noise. This heater did not fill the space of the room with heat, and because it was so loud we had to turn it off at night, meaning the room's temperature plunged to an almost unbearable level. The 'kitchen area' in the room was simply a worktop, with a sink and one cupboard. There was one lone fork between 9 people, and three glasses which clearly hadn't been washed. I came back from this trip with tonsillitis, something I believed I caught from a person who had stayed in the room before me, which then hadn't been cleaned for the next group of people. There was an small lamp that didn't work, and a brown leather sofa with a few cushions that didn't really impress. There was a communal area on the basement floor with a kitchen and tables where you could buy a breakfast, but I wouldn't allow my dog to eat in that area, let alone a group of teenagers. It was bare, freezing cold, and cluttered. How anyone would be expected to prepare food in that area is beyond me, because there was just stuff absolutely everywhere. The paintwork was coming off the walls, there was no carpet, it was dusty and dirty looking, and there were no staff there, so how we were expected to order food was unclear. The staff on reception didn't speak a single word of english, so much so we had to type "we need more toilet roll" into google translate so she would understand us. About the only positive thing about this hostel is it's brilliant location, far enough from the city centre so it's not noisy, yet only a 5 minute walk to the royal mile and princes street. There is also a Sainsbury's supermarket 2 minutes away that provides all food and any products you would need for your stay. We were told by the trip organisers that we would be staying in a different hostel, however according to them, we were relocated at the last minute and given a new address, suggesting that they never intended on putting us in the hostel we were shown online in the first place. What we were shown was a modern, spacious apartment, and we were given a depressing, cold, cluttered room, with mouldy ceilings and no proper facilities. DO NOT BOOK WITH CITY STAY APARTMENTS EDINBURGH.

    Very disapointed.

Stayed here with friends for a long weekend November 2013 Staff were helpful when we went to collect keys and answered our questions about places to go, eat etc. On first glance the apartments are nice- a HUGE bath in the bathroom which was a nice "treat".The twin bedroom was incredibly drafty and duvets paperthin- keeping in mind this was the middle of November and Edinburgh is hardly a tropical climate. We asked for additional bedding to be delivered, which they agreed to, but it never arrived despite asking three times- once we even sat in for an hour waiting meaning we lost time to sightsee on what was a short trip. Also feel there should be note made about the stairs- while we didn't have a problem, we had to help another guest reach the top floor with her buggy which was difficult to say the least.
