A welcome throwback to friendly seaside small bed & breakfasts

    rating06 Aug 2025

I’m sure we all have fond memories of staying in seaside small bed & breakfast hotels in our youth. To tell the truth those places as we remember them would not stand up to modern expectations. Arrandale does and does not match up to those modern expectations but it gets enough right that so long as you’re not too precious about certain things then it can certainly serve as a decent enough base for exploring Douglas and beyond. My room at least did have a rather decent en-suite and although the bedrooms themselves don’t have air conditioning the en-suite did have some sort of extractor fan. There’s a good TV in the rooms, a kettle is provided with sachets for tea and coffee and even biscuits are provided. I got a good night’s sleep there on both nights but I had to keep the window wide open throughout despite it only being medium warm outside. On the negative side there are no safes in the room for valuables storage and I didn’t see any USB charging points. These are the types of rooms where you’ll probably want to spend as little time in them as possible, which is fine for busy holiday-makers. The reception desk usually isn’t staffed but a number is provided for you to get in touch. As for the wi-fi, I don’t know, I found it so confusing. A card with passwords was provided but my phone didn’t pick up any of those options. I scanned a QR code that is provided in the rooms and that got me online but I honestly don’t know if I used up my personal data doing so which is annoying because The Isle of Man isn’t covered by my UK mainland phone provider’s data and minutes package. The real star of the show here though is the inclusive breakfast. There’s a really good selection to choose from – more a case of placing your order rather than the buffet approach. The ‘Full Manx’ breakfast with local kippers is superb – you can probably skip lunch on the back of one of those! The service was quick and friendly and that dining/bar room is certainly a nice area for breakfasts at least.I’d be tempted to stay here again just for the breakfasts!

Excellent Traditional Bed and Breakfast Accommodation in a very good location

    rating12 Aug 2024

Lovely traditional Bed and Breakfast family run guesthouse in a historical period building. The staff are very friendly and a choice of freshly cooked breakfast alongwith cereals, tea and coffee is offered and is very good. Wifi works very well and the beds are very comfortable. The location is good and is quiet at night with hardly any noise. Rooms are cleaned daily. The Guesthouse also has its own bar with food available. The addition of water (dispenser) to the breakfast offering would be welcome in addition to juices.

    Disappointing and Misleading.

    rating03 Oct 2023

Very disappointing and misleading. My unfortunate experience is almost identical to Lois C’s September 2022.For many years I wanted to see the Manx Grand Prix on the IOM and coming from Australia this was going to be a major event for me.So after much research on the web I booked accommodation at Arrandale House Hotel on the IOM through Lauren and paid a deposit of £495 in November 2019 for 25-31 August 2020.Covid put an end to that , international travel was finished and the MGP was also finished for two years. As it was beyond my control I sought a refund of my deposit in May 2020, this wasn’t forthcoming and after a number of emails I was offered a 50% discount on my next booking given by Rose and described as “a gesture of goodwill “ , this I thought was better than nothing but of course it meant I had to rebook at Arrandale. In 2022 people were travelling again, so in February 2023 I naively rebooked Arrandale House to use my 50% credit so I could continue with my hope to witness the MANX GRAND PRIX in August. After explaining to the receptionist ( Scott) I had a credit that could be verified by the emails , he didn’t want to know about it or wish to follow this up. So again I naively paid the full deposit thinking that I would sort this small problem out when I got there in person with the email proofs in black and white on paper. They also wanted payment in full before I arrived, another red flag! When I finally met Scott, he was ever so pleasant but was simply dismissive of my claims and said that it was too long ago and that was that!Covid cost everyone, people lost wages , jobs , businesses, and sadly many lost their lives, Arrandale didn’t seem to lose anything at least from me , they got my initial deposit and then another accommodation fee , having promised in writing something different. I naively believed this. Accommodation report, the good and not so good !The GoodThe position is very good. The unit was recently painted. The floor coverings were also new.The Not So GoodAll the fittings, taps and the like were well past their use by date.We booked two bedrooms and got one bedroom, with a sofa bed in the living room. The kitchen couldn’t fit the table, so it was in the living room, which was now a bed room. The kitchen utensils seemed to have come from a car boot sale . All old, in poor condition, and not matching. The kitchen floor had a one inch “ bounce”.The TV didn’t work as it wasn’t connected to the aerial ( now in a “ bedroom “ anyway ).We spent 5 weeks travelling around the UK and had a wonderful time and stayed at some great places , l have to say this definitely wasn’t one of them.
