    Avoid.

    rating25 Feb 2026

Booked here based on it being a central location and from the pictures on booking site appeared nice and clean. Arrived into pub to check in, yound lad was nice who gave us keys, went ourselves to check into room that was in an old stable yard. The room was dire. Blinds didn't work and we're so yellow as if someone had sat and smoked a million cigarettes next to them. (Coming from a smoker) they were disgusting. Random creepy wicker chair in the middle of the room blocking the wardrobe as no other space for it. It looked like the room was being used as storage. Bathroom awful, old, dated , cracked tiles everywhere, definitely would not be using the shower. Normally would ask to move room however I got the impression they would all be the same standard. On check out pub all closed had no idea how to check out. Rang a number that initially didn't answer. All in all its sad really as it wouldn't take much to spruce up the rooms, the blinds can be pulled down as there is curtains, chair needs removing. Only positive was the bed sheets were nice and clean and the only reason we didn't leave.

    Fantastic trip to Ripon

    rating29 Oct 2025

A lovely quiet courtyard room. Had everything you’d need with no fuss and excellent dog friendly space. Nice pub attached. Located in a great area close to the town centre. Some lovely local town walks. Incredible Cathedral inside and out. A must to visit. Workhouse Museum and Police/Jail museum. Great doggy friendly restaurants and pubs. Recommend Portly Pig 🐷 (try the white velvet sour amazing sour) and one eye rat 🐀 micro pubs. The riverside White Rat pub has amazing food.

A Regal Stay at OYO The White Horse: Where Hospitality Goes to Die

    rating26 Aug 2025

Oh, what a delightful gem OYO The White Horse in Ripon, North Yorkshire turned out to be! If you're in the market for a hotel experience that combines the charm of a derelict barn with the warmth of a Siberian winter, look no further. I recently had the absolute *pleasure* of gracing their establishment with my presence, and let me tell you, it was an unforgettable adventure in mediocrity and neglect. Five stars? More like five alarms for why you should run away screaming.Let's start with the culinary offerings—or should I say, the complete lack thereof? Who needs food when you're staying at a place that proudly advertises itself as a hotel? Apparently, the geniuses running this joint decided that sustenance is overrated. No breakfast, no dinner, not even a sad vending machine to tide you over. Starving guests? That's just part of the immersive "survival challenge" experience they're offering. Bravo! And speaking of warm welcomes, the host was a true masterclass in hospitality. Picture this: a greeting so frosty it could chill your pint before you even order one. No smiles, no chit-chat, just a begrudging key handover that made me feel like I was intruding on their personal misery. If you're craving that authentic "you're not wanted here" vibe, this unwelcoming soul delivers in spades. Hospitality awards incoming, surely. Now, onto the room's luxurious amenities. The plug sockets? Oh, they were a thrill—loose and wobbly, like they were auditioning for a role in a horror movie about electrical fires. Plugging in my phone felt like playing Russian roulette with sparks. Safety first? Nah, who needs that when you can live on the edge?Downstairs, the pool table stood as a monument to broken dreams, barricaded behind a fortress of mismatched furniture like it had committed some unspeakable crime. Was it under arrest? Or just too good for us peasants? Either way, if you fancied a game, tough luck—management clearly prefers their recreational facilities to be as accessible as the Crown Jewels. The bar, that supposed haven of relaxation, decided to call it quits early every night, slamming shut before you could even settle in for a proper unwind. Because nothing says "welcome to Yorkshire" like being turfed out prematurely. Pro tip: bring your own booze if you don't want to feel like a teenager sneaking past curfew.Ah, the bed—the pièce de résistance! Springs protruding like eager little assassins, ready to jab you in the ribs all night long. Sleeping here was like cuddling a porcupine on a budget. Comfort? That's for amateurs. This mattress was designed for those who enjoy waking up feeling like they've been in a wrestling match with medieval torture devices.Shower time was equally enchanting. No shower gel provided, because why spoil guests with basics like hygiene? And the hot water? It took an absolute *eternity* to appear, trickling out like it was on vacation itself. By the time it warmed up, I'd aged a decade pondering life's mysteries under a frigid drizzle.Let's not forget the carpets, those filthy masterpieces of grime and mystery stains. Walking barefoot? Only if you're into extreme sports or have a death wish for your soles. They looked like they'd hosted a mud wrestling tournament and never bothered with cleanup. Classy! In summary, if your idea of a perfect getaway involves hunger, hostility, hazards, and hygiene horrors, OYO The White Horse is your dream destination. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and stay literally anywhere else—even a park bench might offer more comfort and cheer. Thanks for the memories, White Horse; I'll cherish them from afar, very far. Zero stars, but hey, at least it's consistent in its awfulness.

Needs a good clean, smells of dog and damp.

    rating10 Aug 2025

This is a budget hotel and the staff are friendly and helpful, but we had to leave as the standard of cleanliness is poor. The first room we were shown smelled of dog. There were dog hairs all over the carpet and air fresheners trying to mask the smell. The hotel staff were helpful and gave us another room, but this room had no windows except for a cracked skylight, cobwebs, mould, had a damp smell and was dirty. The bedding was clean. We left as due to the state of the rooms I was not comfortable sleeping there.

Great host but worst hotel room ive ever had

    rating14 May 2025

This is a review that I posted on hotels.com but it wouldn't let me post my pictures. Absolutely terrible. I booked this venue on the basis of excellent reviews and I'm either assuming we were given the worst room there or the reviews are fake. Room was filthy, cobwebs over ceiling, filthy bed base, mould spores in shower, dust everywhere and I have taken photos for evidence. The room was absolutely tiny, to the point the phrase big enough to swing a cat is a mockery. I didnt get more than an hours sleep, between the two girls next door giggling and singing until 2am and the extremely poor mattress I got next to no sleep. The walls separating us to other rooms were paper thin, I do appreciate these used to be stables and have been hand made but very poor. The shower door handle came off as I opened it, the smell from the toilet was god awful...I'm guessing I'm not the first to mention as there was an air freshener placed directly next to it on the floor. The TV controller wouldn't work so we had no choice of watching tv, except ITV1. No wi-fi at the property which is a basic these days. I am extremely disappointed and will be seeking a full refund. The bar was completely locked up by the time we returned from dinner at 20:30 however I was advised this may be the case if its quiet. Alarm bells began ringing when locals we spoke to seemed to show sympathy when we said we was staying at the White Horse. The only saving grace was the women at the bar dealing with punters and hotel guests, she was so helpful, friendly and overall just a pleasure to speak to.
