Formal Complaint Regarding Unjust Treatment and Language from Front Desk Staff

    rating24 Oct 2024

I am writing to formally address an ongoing issue with your front desk staff. I have previously shared my concerns through a Google review, but I feel compelled to communicate them directly as a paying customer, as the severity of the situation warrants formal attention. For the third time, I have experienced unjust treatment and disrespectful language from your front desk team, specifically from an employee named Tomika. Within the span of just five minutes, she insinuated that we were leaving without paying, accused us of attempting to steal, and even threatened to place us on a blacklist—all while making a scene and undermining us in front of others. Despite being paying customers, we were treated as if we were “less than” and made to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We are unsure if this behavior is driven by racial or sexist undertones, or simply by an overly anxious or uncomfortable nature; however, if Tomika cannot treat Black men with basic respect and dignity, then it is concerning that she holds a customer-facing role. If Kabana condones this treatment or chooses to overlook it, that raises an entirely different set of concerns about the company’s values and commitment to equal, respectful treatment for all guests.Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that you will address these concerns promptly to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Not a YHA anymore but don't let that stop you.

    rating29 Sept 2024

Having stayed before when it was a YHA I already had an idea what to expect. Same standard hostel, apparently being refurbished shortly (as still a lot of YHA signs).Nothing to complain about here except the heat in the rooms. A common issue in hostels I know but it was true even when I was the only one in! Neve Shallev, Guest Services / Front Office at Kabannas London St Pancras, responded to this review Hey Marty,It's always great to see familiar faces! Thank you for your understanding about the signs, we're just in the process of making Kabannas St Pancras all our own. We've noted your feedback about the room temperature, as we're always looking to improve our guests' comfort. We hope to see you again soon after our refurbishment, and hopefully, we'll make your next stay even better!Safe travels,Kabannas St Pancras Team :)

London experience - wombats is better

    rating18 Sept 2024

**Google Review****Rating: 2 Stars**I had a very disappointing stay at this hostel. They clearly treat their guests differently, and it's especially bad for women of color. From the moment I arrived, the staff was rude and dismissive towards me and my group, while treating white guests with noticeably more respect. I was rudely awakened by the front desk staff, and the bakery staff acted as if I didn’t have money or was somehow less than them. It was shockingly poor customer service. I also witnessed another group experiencing the same mistreatment.Honestly, I think they pay for their reviews. There’s no way 4-5 people actually like this place. I’d ask for my money back, but it’s obvious this isn’t a place that cares about their guests. I’m writing this to warn others so you can make an informed decision. They even tried to force a beautiful girl into a room with all 40-year-old men after she paid for the all-girls suite. It’s unacceptable.I know people read reviews like this and think, “He must have been angry,” and you’re right—I am. But as you read this, ask yourself: do you really want to risk me being wrong or go to one of the other 70 hostels in the area that are rated over 4.3? Save yourself the trouble and avoid this place. You’ll thank me later. Neve Shallev, Guest Services / Front Office at Kabannas London St Pancras, responded to this review Hey there, We're really sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience - that's not what we strive for at all. We're committed to treating all our guests with the same level of respect and courtesy, regardless of their background. We absolutely do not condone any form of discrimination and we are disheartened to hear that you felt differently. As for the room allocation, we offer female-only dorms and private rooms for more privacy and we would never force a guest into an inappropriate rooming situation. Your feedback is valuable in helping us ensure all our guests feel comfortable and respected during their stay. We hope you'll consider giving us another chance in the future.Best, Kabannas St Pancras Team

    Disappointing and uncomfortable

    rating02 Sept 2024

Booked for a night before travelling on the eurostar early the next morning, having stayed in many hostels before and heard good things about this ex-YHA hostel. Friendly staff at reception and the bar but the room was disappointing and I had one of the worst nights’ sleep of my life. Despite being on the 5th floor and wearing good earplugs, as well as having considerate bunkmates, the traffic noise was extremely loud - constant sirens, heavy trucks going past, beeping horns etc - and I didn’t get any sleep. I understand that a hostel in central London won’t be silent but it was deafening the entire night. The bunk bed was wobbly and the sheets were stained when I arrived, also very uncomfortable and left with sore legs and back. The communal bathrooms were also quite dirty and smelly, with random belongings left there. I ended up leaving 2 hours earlier than I had planned just to get out of the bed. Neve Shallev, Guest Services / Front Office at Kabannas London St Pancras, responded to this review Dear Helen,We're really sorry to hear about your experience. Having a good night's sleep is a must, especially when you have early travels. We're planning some renovations to improve sound insulation and overall comfort, which should help with the traffic noise and bed issues you mentioned. We're also looking into ways to enhance our cleanliness standards, especially in communal areas. Your feedback is invaluable, as it helps us understand where we need to focus our improvements. We hope you'll consider giving us another chance in the future.Best,Kabannas St Pancras Team
