Very nice hotel, but be aware!

    rating05 Jun 2026

This hotel was honestly nicer than I expected. The decor was great and the room was very clean and comfortable. I didn't get a chance to eat at the buffet as they were cleaning it up (at 9 am on a Saturday!) when I arrived. However, there are 2 cautions I feel I need to mention to anyone staying here:1. If you book with the hotel's website, be VERY careful and double check your dates. I was booking a night while on a cruise ship, so my WiFi wasn't the best. Somehow, the date I was booking got changed back to the current date without my knowledge, and I ended up being charged for a night when I could not stay, as I was still on my cruise. I only discovered the error when I was reviewing the reservation the day before I thought I was staying there. When I asked hotel management if they could do anything to help with the charge, I was told that they were 95% full that particular night and would not give me any credit for the error with their website. So I've paid for 2 nights yet only stayed one.2. There is no air conditioning in the rooms. We didn't have a problem in May as we could open the windows, but there weren't any screens and I'm not sure what it will be like once the mosquitos arrive.

    Great Service!

This is a wonderful hotel- clean, comfortable and centrally located. The staff here are friendly and helpful. We stayed 2 nights, left for Denali and returned for an additional night. They held our bigger suitcases here while we were in Denali and had them in our new rooms when we returned at 8pm 2 nights later. Great service! We highly recommend staying here.

    Cozy, friendly, historic

    rating28 Dec 2025

I was welcomed in and informed that I had been upgraded to a suite for my overnight stay! The hotel is “out of date” - which is exactly what I loved about it. It’s a cozy landing spot in downtown Anchorage, with a friendly and caring staff. The hotel itself has a lot of personality - it was decorated for Halloween! There were historical photos of the building in the staircase that I enjoyed looking at. One of the reasons I chose to stay here was because of its history, surviving the Good Friday earthquake in 1964.The breakfast buffet left a bit to be desired, but I’ll take an offering over nothing at all. Just even having coffee and some potatoes to kick off my day exploring the Anchorage area was a very welcome amenity. I only stayed at the Historic Anchorage Hotel one night after a longer trip elsewhere in Alaska. I hope to stay here again on my next visit to Anchorage.

    Comfortable beds. Great location

    rating22 Sept 2025

We stayed a few nights in the Historic Anchorage Hotel. Overall, a good stay. How were the staff? 10 out of 10 - All the staff were friendly and polite. How clean was the hotel? 7 out of 10 - The common areas of the hotel were very clean. Bed linen and towels were spotless. Dust on the carpets in our room behind the chest of drawers. Generally okay. How were the facilities? 8 out of 10 - Room was very comfortable with TV, plenty of hot water, coffee making, hairdryer, etc. No A/C - we regulated the room temperature by opening a window and using a supplied fan. For one of the oldest hotels in Alaska, the facilities were pretty good. The seating areas on the ground floor are great. The hotel bar area is lovely but no longer operates as a bar - you need to go out if you want to buy a beer etc. The hotel will store your bags on check-out which is useful if you have a late flight. How did you sleep? 6 out of 10 - The hotel is in the middle of downtown which makes it super convenient for walking to restaurants etc. However, Anchorage has a sizeable population of people sleeping on the streets. Drunken behaviour (shouting) is common throughout the night. If you sleep with the room window open, you are probably going to get woken up by noise on the street below. Saying that, the beds and pillows are super comfortable. How was breakfast? 7 out of 10 - Breakfast is free. It is a simple buffet with a mix of hot (eggs, sausage, pancakes, etc) and cold (yoghurt, cereal etc). Not a huge selection but adequate to start your day. Hotel rates are expensive in Anchorage compared to the lower 48 - So a free breakfast is definitely a bonus. Would you stay at this hotel again? Yes - Now that we understand the street noise at night, we would probably ask for a room facing the back of the hotel if we book again. A little on the expensive side, but a great location for getting to the railway station and all the downtown attractions. Casey Neumann, Owner at Historic Anchorage Hotel, responded to this review Thank you so much for your thoughtful review! We’re glad you enjoyed our comfortable beds, friendly staff, and central location. We appreciate all of your feedback. We’d love to welcome you back again, and a room on the quieter side of the hotel would be a great choice for your next stay.
