Owner leaves instructions on door but adds fees to be paid before your code will work. Blames fees on booking site. Tells you they will pay you back but it becomes a huge run around. Never got paid. House is clean. Drone watching overhead of patio in morning a little off putting. Location off a dirt road makes it feel rustic and charming but I’d never stay there again.

    Peace and Solitude

    rating03 Nov 2025

My stay at the Volcano Forest Inn exceeded expectations. It was the perfect setting and quite the adventure driving in the light rain a few hundred yards down a dirt road surrounded by thick trees to finally arrive at this beautiful Inn nestled in the Volcano Forest. Jon texted the entry code as well as very detailed instructions and information prior to my arrival which was very useful as well as welcoming. If I texted a question, he would promptly respond. Jon was there to greet me as I drove up and was very friendly and helpful. He showed me all of the amenities: an accommodating kitchen full of kitchenware, plenty of snacks, coffee, tea, fresh fruit, pasties, etc.; the living room with a flatscreen TV showing a live stream of the volcano; my room which was very spacious, clean, and comfortable. Although all of the rooms were occupied, it was always quiet and peaceful. Not once did I encounter another guest while using the kitchen to get coffee and breakfast during my entire stay. It truly felt like I had the whole place to myself. Volcanoes National Park was minutes away and the close location made it very convenient for me to access the Park whenever the lava was flowing. I will stay at this beautiful, and serene Inn every time I visit the Big Island from south Maui. I was looking for peace and solitude and found it at the Volcano Forest Inn. Unforgettable experience!

A Disappointing Stay at Volcano Forest Inn

    rating16 May 2025

This property is a house with multiple rooms that the owner rents out nightly. I believe there are five rooms in total. The common entrance, secured by a code, leads into the shared kitchen, dining, and living areas. The overall condition of the living spaces has noticeably deteriorated and requires significant maintenance. The kitchen appears worn out and dirty, making it uninviting to use. Additionally, there is a lingering odor in the house, possibly due to the area's rain and humidity. Our stay was brief, as we spent most of our time exploring Volcano National Park—a definite advantage of this property due to its proximity. However, our experience inside the room itself was far from comfortable. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, with noticeable springs pressing against our backs, making restful sleep impossible. We booked our stay through AAdvantage Hotels, which operates through Rocket Travel. All taxes and fees were collected in advance. However, upon arrival, we were unexpectedly asked to pay an additional $80 in cleaning fees at check-in, which led to frustration. While we recognize that this miscommunication was not the property owner’s fault, we are currently disputing these fees with Rocket Travel. Given the poor condition of the property and the uncomfortable stay, we cannot recommend this hotel to other travelers.

Make sure you have your entry code in advance.

    rating07 Apr 2025

The check-in process was a bit confusing. We didn’t receive a code for the entry door lock. After calling the owner, we found out that TripAdvisor had sent the information to my Booking.com mail. The owner was quick to respond and we eventually were able to self check-in. The location was great, but the amenities were mediocre. The beds were springy and not firm. But, we were just there for one night and we made sure the experience was manageable by and for everyone. Everything else besides that was fine.

    Paradise in the jungle

    rating10 Jun 2024

Jon was an excellent host. Property is 200 yards from a lightly traveled road so very quiet. The facility is surrounded by tropical forest and is only 1 mile from entrance to volcanoes national park and 25 minutes from Hilo. Room was huge, about 27'x21'. It had a private covered deck to listen to the rain and pheasants who occupy the surrounding forest at night. No mini-fridge in the rooms but the large fridge in the shared area was accommodating. Breakfast was trail bars, muffins, fruit, coffee and hot tea. The building has 4 bedrooms and a shared common area with common kitchen. We never saw another patron and Jon was discreet. Just what we needed to recharge our batteries and have easy access to a fantastic park.
