    Historical Degas House

    rating05 May 2026

I stayed at the Degas House during Jazz Fest this past weekend. It is a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully appointed with period furnishings and art reproductions of Degas’s work. My favorite place is the courtyard which has so much character! The porches are the place that I saw most people hanging out. They have breakfast, a bar and a beautiful grand piano.

Calling this a luxury is seriously misleading.

    rating03 May 2026

I booked a four night stay at the Degas House (March 26–29, 2026) and had the most disappointing hospitality experience I’ve encountered in years of extensive travel. When we arrived on the 26th, the room we booked had clearly not been prepared. We found dirty floors, a dirty refrigerator, used bath towels, a used decanter of wine, and even a used Q tip. I immediately contacted the owner, David Villarrubia, to request a refund. He was off-site shopping for the event that would begin in an hour. He convinced us to try another room though the limited staff on hand were busy preparing for the event. The second room was hastily put together by the otherwise busy staff. After waiting for more than an hour to have a room, we had little time to prepare for our own engagement. But once we had time to look more closely later that evening, we discovered similar unhygienic conditions. That night, we were told the on site event would end around 10 PM, but loud conversations and banging noises continued until after 1 AM, making it impossible to sleep. An employee apologized via text in response to my complaint, explaining that it had not been the plan to keep the bar open so late. The next morning (March 27), we informed the owner by email and text that we could not stay there. Over the next several days, I sent multiple follow ups requesting a response, including notifying him of plumbing issues in the shower/tub. He eventually replied on March 29, acknowledging the situation, thanking us for handling it professionally, and saying he would address it with his “retired” manager. On March 31, he emailed again saying we “certainly do deserve a refund” and that he was waiting for a consultant to advise him on how to make it up to us.After that, communication became increasingly unprofessional. David asked if we could talk “in the next few days,” but when I proposed speaking that same day at a specific time, he did not respond. I attempted to call him anyway, with no answer. Later that evening he scheduled a call for April 11th at 1 PM. Even then, I waited more than 10 minutes past the scheduled time for him to be available, which showed a lack of respect for the fact that guests also have obligations.During the call, once we agreed that he would refund the three unused nights, he said it would be processed at the end of the month. When I expressed that this timeline was unreasonable, he became irritable and sarcastic, saying things like, “Fine, I’m the bad guy here. I guess you want a pound of flesh. Give me the address where I can send that to.” He then abruptly ended the call. I remained calm and professional throughout; I made no accusations beyond stating the facts. To be clear, my dissatisfaction has nothing to do with the age of the property. We appreciate historic homes and have stayed in many — including older ones. But this was by far the dirtiest and most unsanitary. You cannot lean on the charm of a historic property while neglecting basic housekeeping and guest care.We requested a refund only for the three nights we did not stay — $350 per night, totaling $1,050 (not including taxes). We have tried to be reasonable at every step. Unfortunately, despite acknowledging that we deserved a refund, the owner has not followed through.Based on the unhygienic conditions, the noise issues, and the unprofessional handling of the situation afterward, I cannot recommend the Degas House. I hope management will take these concerns seriously for the sake of future guests.

    booking overcharge

    rating08 Nov 2025

I was thrilled to share a New Orleans wedding experience with a friend, unfortunately the Degas House owner has been reluctant to address an issue of a double booking. Yes, the room, the only room booked for the exact same dates, for the same person was booked twice, and consequently, I was charged twice. An honest mistake somehow, and this would not have caused Daid, the owner to lose another booking as he claims, yet he refuses to respond to my emails, texts, or phone call. $862.52 for 2 nights in the Jeanne Garret room, top floor, no windows, which I understood when I booked the room has let a bitter memory of what should have been a perfect one. I will not go into the other concerns I heard as this is the only one affecting my stay.

Great historical house with amazing caretakers.

    rating04 Sept 2025

The history in this house and in this part of town is amazing. We didn’t know a ton about Degas before staying there but we were interested in learning. We went to a couple of the local art museums and looked at several of the original Degas artworks. The house has such an amazing feeling to it. I’m sure some renovations have had to be done over the years but it feels just as if it’s been untouched for over 100 years. It’s a beautiful place to stay. David was amazing and very helpful. It’ such a unique place with a cool history. We definitely hope to stay there again at some point in the future.
