UNACCEPTABLE for a Hilton Brand Hotel

    rating16 Jun 2026

Disappointing Stay at DoubleTree by Hilton Newark Penn StationI was very disappointed with my stay at this hotel. From the moment we arrived, there were issues that significantly impacted our experience. The elevator from the street level to the lobby/check-in area and guest rooms was out of service for our entire stay (Day 1 through Day 3). This was extremely inconvenient, especially when traveling with multiple pieces of luggage. Guests were expected to navigate around the issue, but escalators are not a practical option when carrying heavy bags. A major accessibility concern like this should have been addressed immediately or, at the very least, communicated in advance.Prior to arrival, I called the hotel and was told I could check in early. However, when I arrived at 3:30 PM, I was informed that check-in was not until 4:00 PM and that the hotel's computer systems were down. There was a line of approximately 15 families waiting in the lobby. The systems eventually began "kind of" working, and I was finally able to check in at 4:20 PM.As a Hilton Honors member, I asked about the complimentary bottled water typically offered to guests. I was told that only Gold and Diamond members receive complimentary water. When I requested to speak with a manager regarding this and other concerns, I was informed that the manager was not available. The hotel itself is in need of some TLC. The towels in our room were noticeably yellowed and appeared worn. When I asked housekeeping for replacement towels, I was told there was a towel shortage. I found that completely unacceptable for a Hilton-branded property. The one bright spot was the staff. Everyone I interacted with was polite, friendly, and did their best to help despite the challenges they were facing.Unfortunately, between the broken elevator, delayed check-in, lack of management availability, towel shortage, and overall maintenance issues, this stay did not meet my expectations. I hope management addresses these concerns, as the location near Newark Penn Station is very convenient and the staff deserve better support.

    rating10 Jun 2026

Starts with check in is at 4 . I sat in what would be poorly described as a lobby , old run down small . For two hrs . Not one room became available . Then at 4 pm Lo and behold rooms are open . The room was poorly cleaned run down and in need of a refurb . But they have a no cancellation on day of . Run from this property like the plague

    Average stay with convenient location

    rating30 May 2026

Hotel was average with ageing rooms and facilities. Location was convenient near the Newark Penn station with direct PATH trains to New York and Amtrak trains to the northeast cities. Airport shuttle was efficient leaving every 30min.

This property has a fantastic location, but is badly in need of a renovation. I come in from out of town to work with a client in Gateway Center frequently, and if the property was in better shape, I'd stay there all the time. As it stands, I only stay there when I'm in a bind. Customer service could use some help, too. Recently, I booked a stay on a night when there were several types of rooms available. When I checked in, Gold status wasn't acknowledged and I wasn't given an upgrade despite many available options. I will say that the bar and restaurant, The Junction, is also dated, but great. The burger is delicious, and the bartender (Arturo? Gray hair and glasses) is a true gem.

Skip the hotel it’s gross & bad customer service

    rating29 Mar 2026

We stayed at this hotel because we were attending a concert at the Prudential Center. The only reason why I’m giving it two stars is due to the proximity to the venue.Horrendous odor in my room the second we entered. Smelled like mildew and now we are sick.Bathroom was so gross I refused to take a shower and step foot in there. The pictures on the website are misleading it doesn’t look nearly as nice. Popcorn ceilings, peeling wallpaper and just gross.Security guard was one of the rudest people I’ve ever met. At check in she’s barking at us for having patience while proclaiming she’s not a robot and can’t just run to answer the locked door ( it was 4pm). The sign to get in was misleading and we couldn’t tell if we rang the doorbell properly.Front desk agent was slow and less than intelligent. Couldn’t find my name because I have a common last name and didn’t think to look me up using my first name+ last. Didn’t explain the discount for the parking structure well.I felt so skeevy staying there and paid $359 for the night. Absolute disappoint. Holly Hendrix, Owner at DoubleTree by Hilton Newark Penn Station, responded to this review Dear LaurenMJ97, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are truly sorry to hear about your experience and that your stay did not meet expectations, especially during what should have been an enjoyable trip to attend a concert at the Prudential Center. We sincerely apologize for the condition of your room, including the odor and cleanliness concerns you described. This is absolutely not the standard we strive to provide, and your comments have been shared with our housekeeping and maintenance teams for immediate attention and corrective action. We are also very concerned to hear about your interaction with our staff, as this does not reflect the level of service and professionalism we expect from our team. Please know that the hotel is currently under new management, and we are actively working to address issues like the ones you’ve outlined. This includes improvements to guest rooms, clearer communication, and retraining our staff to ensure a more welcoming and efficient experience for all guests. We understand how disappointing this must have been, particularly given the rate you paid, and we truly regret that we fell short. Your feedback is invaluable as we work to make meaningful changes, and we hope you might consider giving us another opportunity in the future to provide a much better stay.Sincerely,DoubleTree by Hilton Newark Penn Station
