Hotel St. James, New York, 26 May 2026

    rating27 May 2026

We had a good stay at Hotel St. James on 26th May 2026. The hotel location at Times Square was very strategic as many of the New York city’s iconic landmarks were located within a short walking distance. We had some issues with the wash basin/sink of our room which couldn’t be fully rectified even though the management was very cooperative in addressing the same.

    Location, location, location!!

    rating25 May 2026

This was a great "budget" hotel (compared to the surrounding hotels). I went to NYC when the temperature outside was in the 50s so the room without AC or heat was perfect temperature. Thus we never had to deal with that aspect, which I know alot of reviews complained about the radiator. The location was awesome - literally down the block from Times Square and couple more blocks to Bryant Park. I had a room with 2 queen beds and it was roomy enough for me and my 2 children. It was rainy and cold on our second night. After our Broadway matinee show, dinner, and visiting Times Square stores, we grabbed a snack at the deli next door and munched in our room and watched a movie. So it was fine for a night to just chill.I personally loved the "oldness" of the hotel. My kids and I marveled at the steep stairs. The elevator was slow but perfectly functional. The lounge area was perfect for our friends to hang out while waiting for me and my kids to stop by our room for various reasons. The hotel will hold your luggage. However be aware that it is not in a secure, closed off room, just a hallway where anyone off the street can access. Thus, do not leave anything valuable behind. My son took the chance and left his Chromebook in his backpack there instead of lugging it the whole day in the rain. It was fine, but definitely a bit nerve wracking to leave that unsecured. My only complaint was there was definitely noise outside the window. Our window faced another building across a small alley. For some reason, in the morning (around 7-8am) there was a lot of what sounded like construction noise. My daughter had ear plugs after the first night so she slept through. So definitely bring the ear plugs. Also if you have mobility issues, I am not sure if there is another way to access the hotel. There are steps to the front door, which does not have an automatic opener. I do not have any mobility issues, but it was a bit awkward going up the steps w suitcases and kids and opening doors. The hallways are also very tight and narrow - not an issue for us, but just a heads up.I would not hesitate to book another stay here. Location really cannot be beat.

Great bones but a real disappointment

    rating03 May 2026

We arrived at the hotel and were immediately greeted by the smell of pot. The front desk service was lackluster bordering on laconic. The elevators and public spaces were shabby and the rooms were completely lacking in charm or even basic artwork. It's a shame - the location is great and the property has the bones of a great hotel. Maybe it recently changed management? Anyway, you can do much better for the same price in this area. I particularly recommend either the Iroquois or the Algonquin. Similar price range but better in every way (see my review of the Iroquois.)

    Just Basic

    rating24 Apr 2026

We have stayed here before and the experience was ok. We knew it was "basic," but its large draw is its exceptional location, just off Broadway/Times Square. This time the “basic” was more pronounced and our experience less comfortable. Our room was bare and the bed not very comfortable. The first night was so cold – the radiator inexplicitly did not turn on - we had to get a heater from the desk and extra blankets. Throughout most nights afterwards, the loud rattling of the pipes was disturbing. We’ll pay the extra bucks next time to upgrade our stay somewhere else.
