    Not good

    rating06 Jan 2026

I don’t know whether the management of this hostel actually reads the reviews. Perhaps they don’t. But this needs to be said. The rooms are extremely dirty. The air conditioners had filters that were clearly not cleaned for months, making the air unbreathable. I was placed in a room where the window did not work, which is unacceptable in an already unhealthy environment. The bathrooms are constantly dirty. It is true that there is a continuous turnover of guests, but this does not justify the complete lack of cleaning and supervision. The dirt remains, accumulates, and no one intervenes.Overall, it was a terrifying experience. Staying here requires an extraordinary level of adaptability. Personally, I hope never to return. The only good thing Is the distance from the centre of Manhattan

Great location but dirty and uncomfortable

    rating01 Nov 2025

Pros- location is great, air con, free WiFi, vending machines, free towels (they gave us more when we asked) wardrobe, drawers. It was quiet enough to sleep. A locker in the room (though ours didn't work). The room was filthy and the mattress was absolutely awful. If you have back problems you will be really sore. Bring warm pyjamas in winter as you don't get much of a blanket. The bathrooms were clean enough but no locks on toilets and the shower doors were see through! There are also no hooks in the showers for clothes. We didn't use the sports facilities or pool so can't comment on this.

    AWFUL MOST AWFUL EXPERIENCE

    rating29 Oct 2025

Worst experience of my entire life. This place had me considering sleeping on the streets. I never thought I’d catch myself crying one the first night of NYC. Not only is this place an ugly hell-sent prison-like cesspool, it is a dirty experience: showers filled with filthy body hair from god knows when or where, dirty cracks in every corner of the room filled with spiders and cockroaches. The wallpaper was pealing at every corner and the walls were paper thin I could hear things I really didn’t want to hear. In addition, there was mould on the bottom of the mattress of the top bunk- trust me when I say if the room looked ANYTHING like its photo I would be crying tears of joy.

Appalling service and horrendous hygiene standards

    rating22 Oct 2025

Having stayed at this property before with a large group, I was very disappointed to find how far the standards have fallen. We were situated on the 9th floor and the bathroom was completely unacceptable. As I had minors in my group, it was shocking to find that none of the toilet cubicles had locks on the doors meaning anyone could walk in to them, creating a significant child protection issue. You would think this would be solved but he lock on the outside bathroom door, but this also didn’t shut properly and remained open unless other guests slammed it shut behind them. The showers had no hot water at all, even after leaving them to run for several minutes. Also, when my group was getting ready to leave in the morning, the cleaners had been sent to clean the bathroom around 7am. This seems odd and quite ridiculous considering this is when most people are trying to get up and ready for the day and we had been given no prior warning about this. As the cleaners completely refused us entry to this bathroom - notably the only one on the floor that we had been given access to - the members of my group had to go down 9 floors in the incredibly slow lifts (which unhelpfully stop at every floor) to reception and ask for access to another bathroom on a different floor. This delayed the entire party meaning we arrived late for reservations all over NYC for the rest of the day. There didn’t seem to be any consideration for this at all. The cleaning also seemed a futile act as there remained a disgusting and unhygienic clump of hair in the shower plughole for the entire duration of our stay.Following on from this, there were several other cleanliness and health and safety issues experienced during our short stay. The members of my group staying in room 952 discovered a cockroach in their room. Room 962 has a hole in the window to the outside meaning the cold air was coming in. I reported this to reception and was told maintenance would see to it the next day — they never did. In room 955, the blind fell off the window on to one of the minors in my party. In room 973, the heavy metal ladder fell off the bunkbed on to another. Several of my party also left the hostel with bites on their body suggesting a lack of cleanliness in the rooms themselves. To add insult to (quite literal) injury, I had a very unpleasant encounter with a male member of staff at reception on the morning of Thursday 16th October around 7am. Having politely asked for a storage room to be opened so that my large group could store their bags, before checking out shortly and heading out for the day, I was told, rather brusquely, that I couldn’t do this until all the room keys had been handed in. My party could have easily handed them in on their way down the stairs from storing the bags but instead he was difficult. He also refused to even tell me if a room would be available once I had collected all 36 room keys in, essentially making us rush around for potentially nothing and to be left standing with 36 cases in the hallway. He kept saying that there would be shift change at 8am suggesting it wouldn’t be his problem. Considering I was allowed to store bags 3 days previously, having not even checked in yet, this rule seems like it had absolutely no standing. It caused undue stress to the children I was travelling with, creating complete chaos with over 30 children pulling suitcases around the hostel looking lost and being aggressively moved on from different areas with nowhere to go as they hadn’t bothered to open the social gathering space — they only did this when another large group came downstairs and the busyness caused a problem for them. Only when I was in tears did the man actually take the room keys I had (not the full amount, notably) and give us the room number. This nonsense caused us to be late for our train from Grand Central, tickets that had cost hundreds of dollars. One of my children also had a panic attack on the Metro as a result of the stress. Quite frankly, this behaviour was disgraceful as he treated us with utter disdain and not as guests who had paid to stay in what I can now only describe as a sub-standard hostel. I really hope YMCA manage to pull this hostel together as it was an appalling stay and not what I’d come to expect from previous stays there. At the very least, clean the showers and put locks on the toilets doors.

Really horrible inside, poor room and pathetic shower

    rating18 Sept 2025

Just got here but at $336nz (190usd for a bunk room for 2) per night, this place is horrible inside, what I imagine jail would be. The noisy old aircon has a smell coming into the room all night and the filter is visibly filthy. Two showers out of 3 have no shower head at all and you can't get hot water at 630am. There are large chunks of paint falling off the walls in the rooms. Worst is the bathroom for ladies, nowhere to change clothes at all or even put clothes apart from the dirty floor. Drains are full of hair. Just so gross and so expensive being centrally located in Manhattan. Building needs modernizing and maintenance
