Valet parking experience

I stayed at this hotel for two weeks, and I want to recognize the valet parking team for the great job they did. They were consistently professional and made the experience smooth every day. I especially want to highlight Johnny Hughes from the valet team; easily one of the most professional people I’ve ever met. His personality and demeanor were always uplifting, and he consistently had my car ready right when I needed it. Starting my mornings with his positivity genuinely set the tone for the day. I appreciated the service across the board, but Johnny’s stood out above the rest.

Overall nice stay, but guest rooms need a decor refresh and update to match this otherwise lovely grand historic hotel, professional service and well maintained common areas. The room space itself is wonderful; spacious with original crown molding high ceilings and big original windows that open a bit for air. However, fixtures and color palette are outdated. I think they were going for a combo of modern neutral and what might hide stains, but it looks like a muddy puddle. And it’s everywhere. 50 more shades of gray and griege. Depressing. Other than the room decor needing a refresh, and the nasty carpet stains, our stay was pleasant and we’d stay again. Bed and bath were clean, in spite of the carpet and outdated furnishings. In addition to the grand lobby and good hospitality, Highlights were the piano player (lounge version of 60’s hit ‘Happy Together’ fantastic!), a cool speakeasy downstairs, palm court dining/bar next to lobby, large well kept fitness area, charming mezzanine, and many event rooms that maintain their historic grandeur. (Psst, time for room refresh, and get a new interior decorator, Hilton).

Johnny Made Us Feel Welcome

Johnny was one of the highlights of our stay. From the moment we arrived, he had such a charismatic, friendly, and welcoming demeanor. He genuinely seemed happy to see guests and made us feel comfortable right away. It’s amazing how much of a difference someone’s attitude can make, and Johnny is exactly the kind of person you want greeting people at a hotel. The Benson feels like home, in peaceful downtown Portland. I'm a native, staying in a beautiful, classy hotel when Mom's home is too crowded. Front desk staff are ON IT! Hot coffee & delicious breakfast delivered quickly, rooms are sparkling, parking attendants are helpful and professional. Already planning a FULL house on Thanksgiving, so we'll be "giving up" our room at Mom's for a quiet stay at the Benson. We'll be blocks from the Friday Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony!
