  A Place to Avoid

  We booked our overnight stay through Choice Hotels. This place is anything but “Choice”. When we arrived the receptionist told us there was an $11 resort fee, something that is not mentioned on the booking site (plus, this is far from being a resort). No apology from the desk clerk, just a response of “there’s nothing I can do about it”. This is a pure example of classic “bait and switch”.The outside of this place looks like a poorly maintained motor inn from the 70s with chipped paint and cracked concrete. Do NOT pay extra for the “golf course view”. The most you will get is a view of a tree and a dusty driving range… and this is the best view available (see photo from our room). Another “bait and switch”.The room had no wash cloths or hand towels, and no towel hooks or bars except one over the toilet. We asked for the missing towels and the receptionist said, I'll have to call my housekeeping”. Again, no apology. An hour later we are still waiting for our towels. Choice Hotels calls the part of their “Ascend Collection”. It will have to “ascend“ a long way to make it even halfway decent.This is a place to avoid.

  The pillows and bed coverings were great! In spite of this and being extremely exhausted, I got very little sleep. Every time someone would open and close their door, it would make the windows rattle because the windows are so outdated. I believe there may have been a herd of elephants staying upstairs that decided to print around about 1 AM. There is no desk person on duty most of the time so I was unable to speak to anyone to get a new room. The lounge and restaurant are not open very early or late so getting anything to eat or drink wasn’t going to happen unless I wanted to use the vending machine. I really wanted a nice cup of coffee and wasn’t able to get one until Saturday morning and I would not call it a cup. It was about five dollars and tasted like instant stuff you mix with water instead of an actually brewed cup of coffee… The views of the mountains were amazing and that was nice!

  This is a MOTEL not a hotel. Thought it was going to be way nicer than it was seeing that it was a country club. Very much like a motel. Only reason why I booked it was because it was really close to our wedding venue. Would not go back again. Very outdated.

  Trust Me, You'll Want to Find Another Place to Stay...

  We stayed here for 6 unfortunate nights recently with my child's sports team. This is not a hotel. It's a motel. On a golf course. We stayed on the first floor on the non golf course side and I'm hearing from other families who were on the golf course side that we lucked out because there were less bugs... Make no mistake, we still had our share of bugs. In fact, I'm still recovering from the 200 bug bites I received during my week at this place. Most of them were received at night - I think - while the kids were in the pool and the parents were socializing. The other bugs were in our room. On multiple days, little black ants appeared out of nowhere in our bathroom sink. Not sure where they came from or how but it makes me shudder to think about it. We even made a conscious effort not to bring food into the room because 1) we were on the first floor of this hotel and 2) it looks like a place that would attract bugs. I was not wrong. There was also a 1.5" centipede in our shower one day which I had to calmly remove on my own so as not to freak out my child who never would've stayed in the room again if they came upon it themself.The walls in the rooms are made of brick and the carpet is so dirty and old, we never went anywhere without our shoes on in the room. The lighting is very poor, only two table lamps in the room so had to open up the blinds on my 1st floor unit just to get more light in, but it came at the expense of privacy. Had a lot of golfers walk by and look right in.The only positive I took away from this experience was the housekeeping service. Not only were they friendly, but they came daily. A place like this requires daily cleaning.Honestly, this facility should be condemned and this place should just operate as a golf course. For the rate we paid for the room block, we thought we were getting a deal, but we actually got ripped off. This wasn't worth anything close to the rate we paid. On top of the fact that this place charges an additional $10/night "resort fee." Yikes. I never plan on staying here again - would not think twice about that. I also highly recommend no one else stay here if your visit takes you to Santee. I'm sure they will all be better options than Carlton Oaks.

  The room was clean and functional with coffee and water provided. The room was worn a bit, and some extreme noise occurred for a while on the first morning, presumably when the neighbors were showering. It sounded like a plumbing issue, but it was constant - not like a water hammer.The pool was pleasant an little used.The restaurant has inconsistent hours and the three times we tried to use it, during normal breakfast or dinner, it was closed. All other times we saw it, it was open.We would definitely stay here again when visiting family, and consider it better than the Santee Best Western, if only because it is quieter and less noisy.
