“A Stay That Didn’t Go as Promised, Hoping Management Will Make It Right”

On our recent family trip to San Diego, we checked into the Hampton Inn & Suites expecting the usual comfort and reliability — but this stay turned into a story I never thought I’d be writing.Let’s start with the bathroom. The lights are on a timer, which sounds fine… until you’re taking your time in the shower or trying to relax in a bath and suddenly you’re standing in complete darkness like you’re in a horror movie. Not exactly the spa moment I had in mind.The bed didn’t help either. It felt like a thin sofa mattress and squeaked every time we moved — I’m talking wild-pig-in-the-forest levels of squeaking. My wife and kids even joked that the bed needed its own vacation.The surrounding area didn’t add much comfort. Right across the way is a strip club called Expose, and there were quite a few homeless individuals around the property. Add in the freeway exit — which requires a sharp right turn — and we nearly got rear-ended twice even with our blinkers on. It’s one of the more stressful hotel entrances I’ve experienced.Breakfast didn’t redeem things. There was a full-on morning rush, and the eggs had a strange smell. The sausage patties tasted like they’d been reheated from the day before — hard, dry, and flavorless.But the biggest issue? Parking.$25/nightWhen we booked through Expedia, it simply said “parking available.” No mention of extra charges. I get that hotels charge for parking — that’s normal — but Hampton’s slogan is literally “We’ll make it right.” So when I politely asked management to remove the unexpected parking fees, especially since it wasn’t disclosed, they flat-out said no.At that point, I figured this was just going to be one of those disappointing stays you chalk up to experience.I encourage any district manager to actually reached out to me personally after I shared my feedback. Still, for now, we’ll be choosing a different spot on our next San Diego adventure.

We Would Stay Here Again

We stayed in this hotel for only one night, but we could have stayed longer. The hotel is clean, quiet, and the staff is friendly. It's nothing fancy, obviously, but we were very happy with it. Breakfast was good and had plenty of options. Our king room was very roomy. The bathrooms are large enough for 2 people to spread out and leave their toiletries on the counter.BUT the 2 things that get the most points from me personally:1. They have a soap dish. It drives me crazy to use a hotel soap to wash your hands, and then have no where to place it but directly on the counter. Only one other hotel has impressed me with such a small but very much appreciated detail.2. The bathroom mirror. They actually have lighting around the mirror/built into the mirror so that you can see to put on makeup. Most hotels have the absolute worst bathroom mirror lighting, this hotel does not.There were 2 reasons that they lost 1 star:1. We were told coffee was available 24 hours a day, but when we went in the late afternoon to grab a coffee, there was no coffee.2. There is absolutely no reason they need to charge $18 for parking at this Kearny Mesa location. That is simply Hilton taking advantage of their guests. Their parkling lot is large, and this isn't a "parking is a premium/luxury to have" location.

One of the more reasonably priced hotels a couple miles from Sharp Hospital which was important to us. Absolutely spotless! Fantastic breakfast service. Surprisingly good coffee. Comfortable bedding and fairly quiet. The area is surrounded by a bunch of wonderful Asian food options which made delivery/ take out easy.

Nice, but some draw backs

The location was great. New hotel, nice decor. The problems were with parking and breakfast. When you park in the back it’s hard to find access to the hotel, not convenient. Breakfast was chaos. The food is in one room with dining space across the hall. With one access and exit point, it was almost impossible to move and get any food. I tried two different times. I walked away the first time. Second time I had to brave it as breakfast was almost over. I saw others look in the room and walk away also. I would recommend going as soon as it opens. Might be better. The elevators are also slow. Everything else was nice. Heads up, the fridge is in the closet.

We were happy with this hotel for the most part. We were able to check in early, and front desk staff were so helpful and accommodating. Breakfast was pretty good.The only problem was the walls were pretty thin. We were awoken by the person next door having a coughing fit which felt like the neighbor was in our room. Other than that, we heard neighbors only a little.Overall decent facility… A little further from downtown than I probably wanted but probably good to avoid comic con congestion.
