Beautiful hotel, beautiful setting, lovely friendly and amazing staff. Obviously not the hotel's fault at all, I'm now on antibiotics, and this explains why I felt a little off-kilter the whole week and struggled to fully enjoy myself. The long flight means sadly I won't be returning any time soon to rectify this, but the hotel is in an amazing spot, the pools are lovely, the room was large and airy, tho the air con was loud. I'd only recommend if you like sweaty heat and just doing nothing, or very little. There's loads to do, evening entertainment is optional, but not my thing, and I was discomforted by the conditions of the hotel vs outside, where it seemed slum-like. Why can't some of the vast wealth shown be transferred to the population to improve their lives? I know the way the world works, I've lived in relative poverty my whole life, but it broke my heart to see how little hard working people there have. It was meant to be my holiday of a lifetime but just didn't feel right.

Just got back from a week’s all inclusive and this is our honest review!
Let’s start with the bad points:

* Our air conditioning didn’t work properly and it stays hot at night! When we asked for it to be looked at the engineer came, said he’d be a minute and never came back, which is pretty poor. At 9pm, we were told that all rooms are the same (we spoke to others in the block and they didn’t have the issue), we did change rooms at 10pm, thanks to Angela & our TUI rep Fanny, we got upgraded to a really nice room. (So didn’t end on a bad point).
* They cancelled our room keys (wristbands) after speaking to the neighbours, they arrived and were given our room and when they saw our stuff in it, they had to go back to reception to say the room was taken. So they must have cancelled our keys then we couldn’t get in (frustrating!) we had to go to reception and get our wristbands reset.
* There are some cockroaches in the less busy areas of the resort
* Depending on which hotel you book, you can only visit some areas of the resort unless you’re an exclusive customer
* When at the beach, vendors will approach you but they’re not rude or intimidating like some countries!
* We chose to not leave the resort,although being told it’s safe to go outside, we felt it looked rough and didn’t want to risk it.
* The people around the resort selling excursions will approach you multiple times a day, even if you’ve previously said no thanks!
* You will get bitten no matter what.. we packed bands, spray, and creams…
* The Greek restaurant wasn’t great.
The good points:
* Our TUI rep, Fanny, was really helpful. We didn’t take much spending money but she helped us find the best excursion for the money we had.
* The staff are all lovely across the resort.
* The buffet is great, with so many options, and the options change (maybe we’re not as fancy as other people but we thought the food was really good and varied!)
* The inclusive drinks menu is one of the best we’ve ever experienced, the cocktails were lovely!
* There’s loads of pools to choose from (some quieter than others) all with swim up bars
* We only did one excursion, the sharky adults only tour, and we cannot recommend enough. The crew are amazing and the experience is unbelievable. We went snorkelling, drank from coconuts and had a great lunch. An experience that we’ll never forget!
General pointers:
* We took US dollars (make sure you take small notes, it’ll be easier to tip!)
* Nothing happens quickly in Punta Cana, probably to do with the weather (ha!)
* Having read loads of reviews before booking, if you want to use the karts to get around, go to the train stops.
* Download the app before you go, you can look at what entertainment is on, book your restaurants, and check in quicker.

Currently still at the hotel. After reading some negative reviews we were very apprehensive. But our experience so far is good except for the lack of diet or sugar free drinks and vegetarian food options. First holiday we have ever had where there is no sugarCurrently still at the hotel. First holiday we have ever had where there is no sugar free drink options! Despite requesting numerous times for our mini bar. The hotel is a bit dated and tatty in places but we were given a newly updated room that is lovely and near the pool and beach. All staff are superstars, they are lovely! English isnt widely used so we are the minority but no problem for us, after all we are in a foreign country. Activities galore, so much to do and a lively fun hotel.

Ours was a two week stay for 3 adults in September 2024, at the Grand Bahia Principe, Punta Cana. Temperatures ranged from 29 to 33 daily.

Plenty of pools with a full list of free daily activities for all. There is also a wave rider at an additional cost.
Nature and wildlife is abundant here, especially at the mangrove on site.
Staff are generally very pleasant, helpful and hard working.
Main food hall has plenty to offer with varied themes each night.
On site restaurants offer great menus, and some have the best views for evening dining.
Apartment had air conditioning.
Plenty of small shops on site, but expect to be hustled.
Evening entertainment every night, usually starting at 8pm.

No use of air conditioning in reception or main buffet hall, despite visible system installed. The fans were not switched on for the entire two week period. Many guests were clearly struggling with the heat, but no respite was offered by a flick of a switch.
US dollar is preferred currency here. If you are misinformed by your booking agent and bring Dominican pesos, expect to be short changed.
Spanish is the first language here, and most staff do not speak English. So expect to struggle if you can't converse in Spanish.
On our 10th day, we found ourselves locked out of our apartment. Our wrist fobs had been deactivated for an unknown reason. It took three visits back to the reception area to correct this. This was an inconvenience, especially in the heat. No explanation or apology was offered.
Don't expect access to hotel WiFi until the second day of your stay. It seems to take overnight for the system to update.
You will need to download the Grand Bahia App if you want to make any restaurant reservations here.
Game activities such as pool and air hockey are not free, so expect to pay for these.
The maitre de at the Greek restaurant on site needs to be spoken to. She repeatedly forced guests to leave reviews, taking their mobiles off them to scan the QR code, taking photos and submitting posts via Google reviews 'on their behalf'. She was rude, over bearing and annoyed several tables during our stay.
There needs to be a dress code for the main food hall. Beachwear is fine for the snack bars and beachside cafes. But guests should be asked to cover up for breakfast and evening meals in the main food hall.
Overall the staff, facilities and systems are in place. The areas for improvement reflect poor management more than anything else.

I only have good things to say about our trip. The hotel is in the process of being renovated and we were informed of this on booking. We were given one of the un-renovated rooms which, of course was a bit tired. But it still became homeI only have good things to say about our trip. But it still became home from home, was very comfortable and welcoming.... oh and the aircon was VERY welcome!
Every single staff member we came into contact with was kind, friendly, helpful and welcoming. Even if there was a language barrier we got past that with 'sign language' and patience on both sides :) I did attempt to use the tiny bit of Spanish that I knew!
We needed to borrow a wheelchair for the duration of our visit which was provided immediately upon request and was of good quality. We also needed to visit the on-site Doctor who was very pleasant and thorough and arranged a visit to an external clinic which went very smoothly and over an done with in an afternoon. The only 'painful' part was the large bill at the end but good old insurance will handle that!
The buffet was excellent with something for EVERYONE. I worried, being a vegetarian, that I would struggle - I needn't have - there was MORE than enough for me! The A la Carte restaurants were great too - we ate in the Garden Grill, Italian Restaurant, Japanese Restaurant and Las Olas Brazilian Restaurant (my partner's favourite due to the unlimited MEAT!)
Definitely planning a return visit!
