The south coast's main gateway sits within roughly forty minutes of Vilamoura, Quarteira and Albufeira by road, so even families with young children can land mid-morning and be at the pool the same afternoon, which matters more than anything else with a toddler in tow.
The Algarve runs long settled spells from June to September, tempered by Atlantic air that keeps evenings comfortable for dinner outside rather than stiflingly hot, so a terrace table stays the default plan from late spring to mid-autumn.
Madeira stays spring-like right through January and February, offering mild walking weather, flowering gardens and a short flight while most of Europe shivers.
Coffee, wine and restaurant bills still undercut most of western Europe, especially a street or two back from the marina fronts and main squares, and the daily spend drops further again inland at Silves or along the eastern lagoon towns.
Charcoal-grilled sardines in Portimao, custard tarts in Belem and port tastings in Gaia give every region its own reason to eat out nightly, without a single tasting-menu price tag in sight.
Resort and city staff switch to English readily, which takes the stress out of menus, pharmacies, taxi ranks and booking the week's boat trips, from the first transfer of the week to the last.

Each of these six bases earns its place for a different kind of trip, and knowing the differences makes even last minute holidays to Portugal easy to pick well.
Albufeira's two faces: The Old Town spreads whitewashed lanes above Praia dos Pescadores while the Strip runs its bars a drive inland, so families and party groups can share the resort without ever sharing a street, and hotel choice here is the widest on the whole coast.
Lagos and its cliffs: Boat trips thread the golden arches of Ponta da Piedade just south of the walled harbour town, Meia Praia stretches east with space even in August, and the restaurant scene keeps a life of its own going long after the season ends.
Vilamoura's marina polish: Portugal's flagship golf resort arranges its smartest hotels around one of the country's largest marinas, with championship courses in every direction, dolphin trips leaving the quays and transfers of roughly half an hour from the coast's gateway.
Lisbon for city weeks: Vintage trams climb between the lanes of the Alfama and the UNESCO-listed Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery, and when the sightseeing is done a direct coastal train rolls out to the sands at Cascais in well under an hour.
Funchal all year: Madeira's capital climbs terraced hillsides above a working harbour, with the Monte cable car and the botanical gardens filling mild days, and for a February half term to Portugal this island is comfortably the most dependable choice.
Porto and the Douro: Tiled townhouses stack above the river directly opposite the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, with cellar tastings, the UNESCO-listed Ribeira district and Douro river cruises all sitting within a short walk of one another.
Most of the coast's best days out can be booked locally once you land, which keeps package holidays to Portugal usefully flexible from the first morning.
Coastal grotto trip: Small boats run into the famous domed sea cave with its natural skylight from Benagil itself plus Albufeira, Portimao and Vilamoura, and because Atlantic swell can cancel sailings at short notice, this is the trip to book early in the week, before the holiday calendar fills up around it.
Ponta da Piedade: Clifftop boardwalks and small harbour boats both reach the rock arches, stacks and grottoes just south of Lagos, and the stone glows best in early morning or late afternoon light, so time the visit around the edges of the day.
Ria Formosa ferries: Boats cross the protected lagoon from Faro and Olhao to barrier-island sands, and with the sea at its warmest in early autumn, an October half term to Portugal can still deliver proper beach days out here among the birdlife.
Levada walking: Madeira's historic irrigation channels carry maintained paths through laurel forest and mountain terraces, running from gentle hour-long strolls to full mountain days, and they remain the island's signature activity in every season of the year.
Riverside wine lodges: The cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia open their doors for tours and tastings year round, most of them within a short walk of Porto's riverside, and an hour underground with the barrels, followed by the walk back along the quays, is the city's definitive wet-weather plan.
Whales and dolphins: The Azores rank among Europe's best whale-watching waters with resident and migrating species through the year, while dolphin-spotting boats leave Vilamoura, Albufeira and Lagos daily in season for a shorter mainland version of the same thrill, so match the ambition of the trip to the coastline you have chosen.
Water park circuit: Slide and Splash at Lagoa, Aquashow near Quarteira and the Zoomarine marine park at Guia all open through the warm months, handing summer holidays to Portugal a ready-made rota of big family days out between beach sessions.
Only the calendar separates them. Hotels cannot sell to families until terms end, so the pre-break weeks price for everyone else. The weather is already in its long settled pattern. The gap closes abruptly once schools finish, which is the deadline worth knowing.
