Cheap Winter Sun Holidays to Iceland

Iceland's offshore and island-linked coastlines are reached by ferry or boat, giving winter visitors a sense of remoteness and open sea.

• Stykkisholmur harbour: Stykkisholmur is a small town on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula with a harbour that serves as the ferry port for Breidafjordur bay, where many islands lie offshore. In winter the harbour feels calm and working, with boats moored against a backdrop of snow-covered hills. Boat trips into the bay depend on weather and season, so we recommend checking sailing times before you plan your day. It is a peaceful base for travellers who prefer slower mornings and maritime views.
• Flatey: Flatey is a small island in Breidafjordur bay that is reached by boat from the Snaefellsnes area, and it is known for its quiet, low-key character. Winter crossings are less frequent than in summer, so you need to plan around the ferry timetable and accept that the island has very few facilities. The reward is a sense of genuine isolation and unspoiled coastline that many mainland destinations cannot match. We suggest it only for visitors who are comfortable with limited services and a flexible itinerary, the same brief our Iceland All Inclusive Holidays deals are built around.
• Videy: Videy is a small island just off the capital that is reached by a short ferry crossing from the harbour area. It is a manageable island excursion for travellers staying in the city who want a change of scene without a long journey. The island is calm and open, with views back across the bay towards the skyline. It works well as a half-day trip when the weather allows. Holidays based in the city often pair this crossing with a waterfront stroll. It is exactly the brief our holidays in the capital are built around. It is exactly the brief our holidays in the capital deals are built around.
• Vestmannaeyjar: The Vestmannaeyjar archipelago lies off the south coast and is reached by ferry or flight, with dramatic volcanic cliffs and a strong fishing heritage. Winter conditions can disrupt travel to the islands, so we advise building in contingency time if you plan to visit. The main island has a small harbour town with cafes and museums that suit a quieter stay. It is best for travellers who want an island experience with a clear sense of place.
• Grimsey: Grimsey is a small island off the north coast that sits on the Arctic Circle and is reached by a short flight or boat from the northern coastal town. It is one of the most remote settlements in the country, with birdlife and cold, windswept coastlines. Winter access is limited, so this is a destination for experienced travellers who understand the logistics involved. We see it as a specialist option rather than a mainstream winter choice.
