Family Holidays to Croatia

The coast's best-known resorts combine easy access to beaches with plenty of things to do for children.

• Bol on Brac: Bol on Brac is one of the most practical family bases on the Dalmatian islands, with a gently shelving shoreline that suits younger children still learning to swim. The resort is reached by ferry from the mainland, which turns the crossing into part of the outing rather than a chore. Accommodation tends to be low-rise and close to the water, so trips to the beach stay short. The trade-off is that evening choices are more limited than in a city, so families should plan a few outings in advance. We recommend Bol for families who prioritise calm water and a relaxed daily rhythm. Croatia holidays built around sheltered bays like this one work especially well for mixed-age groups.
• Split: Split works well for families who want a lively city base with a compact old town that is easy to explore on foot. The promenade and the palace complex give older children history they can actually walk through, while cafés and ice cream stalls keep younger ones content. Ferries from the port reach several islands, so a single base allows a range of day trips. The city is busier and warmer than the smaller resorts, which suits families who enjoy activity more than quiet. We find this coastal hub a sensible choice for a first family visit to the region.
• Dubrovnik: Dubrovnik is a walled medieval city whose old town is pedestrian-only, so children can run and explore without traffic to watch for. The city walls form a circuit of roughly two kilometres, and many families treat the walk as a highlight rather than a chore. Summer crowds are heavy, and the steep stone streets can be tiring in a heatwave, so early mornings are worth planning around. Dubrovnik suits families with teenagers who enjoy history and sea views, and we advise booking accommodation with a short, manageable route back from the old town. Dubrovnik holidays of this kind reward careful planning around the heat.
• Istria (Porec): Porec on the Istrian peninsula offers a resort atmosphere with sandy and pebbly bathing areas and a short walk into the historic centre. Its basilica is a UNESCO-listed site that older children can explore while the younger ones swim nearby. The region is set back from the main ferry routes, so families travel by road and can use a hire car for day trips inland. Porec is a steady, unfussy choice for families who want mainland beaches with good facilities, the same brief our Cheap Croatia Holidays deals are built around, and we suggest it for travellers who value convenience above island isolation. The northern coast offers an easy alternative for families who want to avoid ferry timetables altogether.
• Zagreb: Zagreb is the country's capital and offers a compact centre where museums, parks and cafés sit within walking or tram distance of one another. The Museum of Illusions is a popular indoor option on a wet or very hot day, and the city's green spaces give younger children room to run. A direct airport bus makes arrival simple, which matters after a long journey with tired children. The capital is not a beach destination, so families should pair it with a coastal stay or a mountain-and-lakes trip, the same brief our Croatia Adults Only Holidays deals are built around. We recommend it as a city break with a relaxed pace and a strong focus on culture.
