Croatia Holidays in January

Some stretches of the Adriatic hold on to a little more warmth than the inland north, so these are the spots to consider if mild afternoons matter most to you.

• Hvar: Warmest Places in January: Benitses, on Corfu's east coast, is a sheltered, low-key village where winter sunshine tends to linger longer than elsewhere on the island. Its quiet seafront, traditional tavernas and gentle mild afternoons make it a pleasant option for travellers seeking warmth and calm during the coldest month of the year. It is exactly the brief our Hvar holidays deals are built around.
• Dubrovnik: Dubrovnik sits on the southern Dalmatian coast, where winters are noticeably milder than in the continental interior, making it one of the more comfortable cities to walk in during January. The old town's stone streets and city walls remain open, though hours can be shorter and cruise traffic is largely absent. We suggest it for culture seekers who want a walled medieval city with fewer visitors and clear, cool sea views. It is exactly the brief our Dubrovnik holidays deals are built around.
• Korcula: Korcula is a walled island town reached by ferry from the southern Croatian port city and from Orebic, and its southern position gives it a milder feel than the northern coast in winter. Ferry timetables are reduced in January, so you should check sailings well before you travel. It suits visitors who want a quiet, historic base with the option of an easy island day out.
• Split: Split is a working city on the central Dalmatian coast, and its inhabitants keep its cafés and markets running through winter, so it feels far more alive than most coastal towns this month. The Diocletian's Palace complex is open, and the city is a practical base for reaching islands by ferry when schedules allow. It is the kind of itinerary our Croatia Family Holidays deals are built around, giving families a year-round city with coastal air and easy access to the water.
• Cavtat: Cavtat is a small harbour town just to the south of the historic walled city, and its sheltered position keeps it comparatively mild in January, with the bay calm and the old town quiet. Most seasonal hotels and seafront terraces are closed, so you should expect a very low-key stay. We suggest it for guests who want a tranquil waterfront with a short bus ride into the walled city for culture, the same brief our Croatia Beach Holidays deals are built around.
