Adults Only Holidays to Iceland

Iceland does not have traditional beach resorts, so the strongest adults only bases are its well-connected towns and harbour cities.

• Reykjavik: Reykjavik is the natural anchor for an adults only trip, with a compact, walkable centre where restaurants, bars and the old harbour sit within a few minutes of most hotels. Its position makes it the easiest base for day trips, and the famous loop of geothermal sites and waterfalls can be reached on a single outing from the city. The trade-off is that city hotels cost more and the nightlife is modest by European capital standards, but for couples who want evenings out and convenient access to everything else, we think it is the strongest choice. It is exactly the brief our Reykjavik holidays deals are built around.
• Akureyri: Akureyri is the largest town in the north, set on a long fjord surrounded by mountains, and it gives adults only travellers a calmer alternative to the capital, the same brief our Iceland holidays deals are built around. The town has cafes, a botanical garden and a relaxed pace, and Godafoss waterfall is within driving distance for those who want a day out. You will need a car or an organised tour to see the wider region, which is worth planning for, but the quiet streets and fjord views make it a rewarding place to slow down.
• Husavik: Husavik is a small harbour town on the north coast and the main base for whale watching tours in Iceland, which makes it an unusual choice for an adults only break. Tours leave from the harbour close to the town centre, and cruise calls bring activity to the port during the summer season. The town is modest in size, so evenings are quiet, but for travellers who want a single focused activity and an unhurried pace, it works well.
• Stykkisholmur: Stykkisholmur is a small town whose harbour serves as the ferry port for the wide bay beyond, offering a quiet base for travellers who prefer peace to nightlife. The town sits on the western tip of Iceland's northern coast, so the surrounding coastline and lava fields are close by for walks and drives. Accommodation options are fewer than in the capital city, so booking early matters, but the slower rhythm suits couples who want to switch off completely.
• Vik: Vik is a village on the south coast along the Ring Road, a long drive from the capital, and it is known for its black sand beach and basalt sea stacks. Its small size means the evenings are very quiet, which many adults only travellers find restorative after busy days of sightseeing. The strong waves at nearby beaches mean you should keep a safe distance from the water, but for coastal scenery and an unhurried stay, the village is hard to beat.
