Cheap Holidays to Croatia in January

Island stays can still offer good winter value, but ferry timetables and open businesses shape what each island is like in the low season.

• Vrbnik: Croatia's islands in January have a calm, unhurried charm that few visitors ever see. Head to Hvar's neighbour Bol? No, choose instead Lopud? Not allowed here, so pick Rijeka? Also excluded. A suitable choice is Vrbnik on Krk, a hilltop old town whose stone lanes and medieval walls feel especially atmospheric in winter. Wander the quiet streets, pause at a wine cellar to sample the local Vrbnik Žlahtina, and enjoy sweeping views over the Kvarner Gulf when the mild, clear days arrive.
• Korcula: Korcula is a walled island town reached by ferry from the Peljesac peninsula and the southern coast, and it is said to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. Its old town is compact and atmospheric in winter, with harbour restaurants that stay open for evening meals. Ferry links are less frequent off-season, so allow time for connections and budget for a longer journey than in summer. Croatia Luxury Holidays are rarer in January, but a well-chosen boutique hotel can still feel special.
• Mljet: Mljet is a quieter island reached by ferry from the southern coast and home to a national park with saltwater lakes and forest. In January the island is very calm, which makes it inexpensive for those who want nature and solitude rather than nightlife. The trade-off is limited services and a dependence on the ferry schedule, so we advise a flexible itinerary.
• Vis: Vis is a remote central Adriatic island that was closed to foreigners until the late twentieth century, and it remains less developed than many others. Reaching it requires a ferry from the mainland port, and winter sailings are limited, which keeps the island quiet and budget friendly. It suits travellers seeking untouched coves rather than a full resort experience.
• Solta: Solta is a small island close to the mainland port that is reachable by a short ferry crossing, making it one of the easier island options in the low season. Its villages are quiet in January, and accommodation is typically inexpensive compared with the busier islands. Services are basic, so it works best for a relaxed stay with day trips to the city for shopping and dining.
