Last Minute Holidays to Croatia in January

These coastal bases are the most reliable choices for a last minute winter break, with year-round accommodation and regular transport links.

• Split: Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and a practical base in January because it stays active all year, with a working ferry terminal and an airport shuttle that runs through the quieter months. The city centre is compact enough to walk, and the cafes along the seafront remain open even when the beaches are empty. We recommend Split for travellers who want a lively, dependable base rather than a seasonal resort that may be shuttered. Its main trade-off is that winter sea swimming is off the table, so the appeal is culture, food and easy day trips. It is exactly the brief our Croatia holidays deals are built around.
• Dubrovnik: Dubrovnik is a walled medieval city on the southern Dalmatian coast, and in January its old town is far quieter than in summer, which makes the stone streets and sea views feel more personal. The city walls can be walked in a circuit of roughly 2 km, and the shuttle or taxi from the airport into the old town is straightforward at this time of year. Accommodation choice is good but prices in the old town can be higher than in the surrounding districts. We suggest Dubrovnik for couples and culture-focused travellers who want a historic setting with an unhurried winter pace. It is exactly the brief our Dubrovnik holidays deals are built around.
• Zagreb: Zagreb is Croatia's capital and largest city, and it is the most dependable winter base because its museums, cafes and restaurants operate on normal hours throughout January. The historic upper town of Gradec and St Mark's Square are a short walk from the lower town, and a direct airport bus makes arrival simple. Inland Croatia can be cold and occasionally snowy, so the trade-off is a winter break built around indoor attractions and warm food rather than the coast. We recommend Zagreb for city-break travellers who want a practical January trip without the seasonal closures of the seaside.
• Rovinj: Rovinj is a small Istrian fishing town whose old quarter rises from the sea on a peninsula, and it keeps a sheltered, local feel in winter. Some seafront restaurants close in the low season, so we advise booking a hotel that is confirmed to be open rather than assuming the town will be fully active. The drive from the nearest airports is longer than to the other well-known Adriatic resort cities farther south, which is a real consideration for a short stay. Rovinj suits couples who value a quiet, atmospheric coastal town and are happy to plan around reduced opening hours. It is exactly the brief our Croatia Luxury Holidays deals are built around.
• Porec: Porec is a coastal town in Istria in western Croatia, known for its sheltered harbour and its Euphrasian Basilica, a UNESCO-listed site. In January the town is calm, and the wine and food culture of the surrounding Istrian countryside remains accessible for tastings arranged in advance. The main compromise is that beach clubs and watersports operators are closed, so the stay is best suited to slow sightseeing and long lunches. We suggest Porec for food lovers and couples who prefer a quiet winter base within reach of the Istrian interior.
