Croatia Holidays in September

The southern Dalmatian coast keeps the most reliable late-summer warmth, so these spots suit travellers who want heat and sea swimming in September.

• Dubrovnik: Dubrovnik sits at the southern end of the Dalmatian coast, where the sea holds its warmth longest into the autumn. The walled old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city walls form a circuit of roughly 2 km that is most comfortable to walk in the cooler morning hours of September. Expect hot afternoons and plenty of sun on the stone streets. We would recommend this city for travellers who want warm water and a historic setting in one place. It is exactly the brief our Dubrovnik holidays deals are built around.
• Hvar: Hvar is among the sunniest islands in Croatia, and its harbour town keeps a lively feel well into September. The ferry from Split takes a little over an hour, so day trips and island swimming are easy to fit in. Evenings on the waterfront are warm and calm, though some seasonal bars begin to wind down later in the month. For sunshine and a dependable sea, this island is a strong choice. It is exactly the brief our Hvar holidays deals are built around.
• Korcula: Korcula is a walled island town on the southern Dalmatian islands, reached by ferry from Orebic and the historic walled city to the south. Its sheltered coves hold warm water through September, and the town feels quieter at this time of year. The main trade-off is that transport links are less frequent than on the busier routes, so plan ferry times carefully. It suits travellers who want warmth without the crowds.
• Split city: Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and grew around the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. In September the city keeps its warm daytime temperatures, and the seafront promenade stays busy into the evening. Ferries run from the port to nearby islands, which makes the city a good base for sun-seekers. It is a practical choice when you want warmth alongside a working city. • Vis island: Vis is a remote island that was closed to foreigners for decades under the Yugoslav army, which means it has far less development than most islands. Reached by ferry from the mainland, it offers quieter beaches and warm sea well into September. Some small seasonal businesses reduce their hours as the month progresses, so book accommodation early. This island is the right pick for travellers who value calm over nightlife.
