Holidays from Bristol to Greece

Our Bristol departures are built around the routes and transfer arrangements that suit a Greek trip, and the points below explain what to expect at each main destination.

• Athens: Athens is the natural starting point for most Greek trips, and the airport sits roughly thirty-five to forty kilometres from the city centre. You can reach the centre by metro or express bus, which keeps the journey straightforward after a flight. We see Athens as the strongest option for a first visit because the hilltop ancient citadel, its museum at the foot of the rock and the historic Plaka district are all close together. Our recommendation is to pair a few nights here with an island stay if you want both culture and sea. Athens holidays
• Piraeus: Piraeus is the largest passenger port in Greece and lies roughly ten kilometres from the capital's centre, reachable by metro. It serves as the principal ferry hub for the Cyclades, Saronic and Dodecanese islands, so many island journeys begin there. Travellers continuing by sea should allow a longer day than a direct flight would need. We find this route suits people who want a city stay followed by a ferry-based island visit.
• Santorini: Santorini is easily reached by air or by sea from the mainland, and its volcanic caldera is one of the most recognisable views in the country. Flights are the quicker option, while ferries are slower but offer a relaxed crossing. Because the island is popular, we advise booking travel early in the season. It remains a strong choice for couples who want dramatic scenery and sunsets. Santorini holidays
• Crete: Crete is Greece's largest island and is served by Heraklion airport, with the island's western half reached along the north coast road. Ferries connect Crete with the mainland, and the island suits visitors who want mountain scenery, long beaches and Minoan history at Knossos, which is about five kilometres from Heraklion. Driving between regions takes time, so we suggest choosing one base rather than moving around. It works well for a longer trip. Crete holidays
• Corfu: Corfu is an Ionian island with flights from several UK airports, which makes it one of the more accessible Greek destinations for a short transfer. The old quarter of its town has a Venetian fortress and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the island is greener than many Aegean islands. Its beaches are sandy on both east and west coasts, so the sea varies depending on where you stay. We recommend it for those who want greenery alongside a shorter journey. Corfu holidays
