Holidays from Glasgow to Greece

Glasgow departures to Greece vary by season, and the places below show how each route connects to your onward journey.

• Athens: Athens is the natural gateway for most Glasgow travellers, because Athens International Airport sits roughly 35 to 40 km from the city centre and is served by both metro and express bus. From the airport you can reach the centre in around an hour depending on traffic, which makes the capital a practical first stop before an island connection. We find it works best for travellers who want history and city time alongside their beach days. Our recommendation is to allow a full day in the city before heading onward. It is exactly the brief our Athens holidays deals are built around.
• Corfu: Corfu is the Ionian island most often linked to flights from UK airports, and it can be reached directly on many seasonal services. The island's main settlement, with its Venetian fortress, sits close to the airport, so transfers are generally short compared with the larger islands. The trade-off is that the island is greener and quieter than the Cyclades, which suits families and those who want beaches without the nightlife. We think it is one of the most straightforward island choices for a Glasgow departure. It is exactly the brief our Corfu holidays deals are built around.
• Rhodes: Rhodes has direct flights from UK airports, and its resort areas sit a short drive from the island's airport. The resort of Faliraki is about 15 km from the main town, so you can reach the medieval Old Town by bus or taxi without a long transfer. Rhodes works well for travellers who want resort facilities and a historic town in the same trip. Its beaches are sandy and generally sheltered, which we find ideal for families. It is exactly the brief our Rhodes holidays deals are built around.
• Crete: Crete is Greece's largest island, and its main airport serves the island directly, making it a practical choice for a Glasgow departure. The airport sits close to the island's largest city, and the palace site at Knossos is about 5 km away. Crete suits travellers who want long sandy beaches on the north coast alongside ancient history and mountain scenery. Transfers to the resort areas on the eastern and northern coasts take longer than in the smaller islands, so we factor that time into our recommendations.
• Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki: The northern city airport is the main access point for Chalkidiki, a peninsula with three finger-shaped headlands and sandy beaches that shelve gently into the sea. The drive from the airport to Chalkidiki is a longer onward journey than an island ferry, so it is worth weighing up against an island with a shorter transfer, the same brief our Cheap Greece Holidays deals are built around. Chalkidiki is a sound choice for younger children because the sea is shallow and the beaches are gentle. We check the coach and car arrangements carefully for this route before confirming a booking.
