Holidays from Leeds Bradford to Iceland

Iceland's beaches are defined by black volcanic sand and powerful Atlantic surf, which makes them dramatic rather than relaxing.

• Vik black sand beach: Vik is a small village on the south coast, sitting on the Ring Road a long drive from the capital, and it is known for the black sand of the nearby beach. The basalt sea stacks and columns offer some of the most striking coastal scenery in the country. The trade-off is that the waves here are strong and can be dangerous, so swimming is not advised. We recommend this stop for travellers who want to admire the coastline and enjoy walks rather than time in the water. Iceland Beach Holidays suit this kind of scenic visit well.
• Reynisfjara surf caution: Reynisfjara is the black sand beach near the village, famous for its basalt columns and its powerful waves that can arrive without warning. The beach is best enjoyed on foot, with visitors keeping well back from the water's edge at all times. Because the sea here is cold and unpredictable, bathing is not a realistic option. We recommend it as a striking stop rather than a place to spend a lazy afternoon.
• Diamond Beach near Jokulsarlon: Diamond Beach lies near the glacier lagoon of Jokulsarlon in the southeast, where icebergs that drift out from the lagoon wash up on the black sand. The contrast between the glittering ice and the dark sand creates a memorable scene for photography. The beach is far from the main cities, so it requires a long journey by road. We see it as an excellent addition to a southern circuit for travellers prepared for the distance.
• Seltjarnarnes: Seltjarnarnes, a quiet peninsula just west of the capital, is a favourite for families and walkers who want the sea without the crowds. Its shoreline paths, grassy headlands and sheltered bays make it easy to enjoy the coastline on foot, with the Atlantic views and birdlife close at hand. The main drawback is that facilities are limited, so most visitors base themselves in the city and make a short trip out. We recommend it for travellers who want a calm seaside stroll and a relaxed beach atmosphere rather than swimming.
• Ytri-Tunga: Ytri-Tunga, a small beach on the peninsula near Hellissandur, is famous for the seals that often rest on its rocks just offshore. Golden sand and dark basalt outcrops frame a sheltered bay that feels wonderfully remote, with the glacier of Snaefellsjokull rising in the distance, the kind of unspoilt scene our Iceland Luxury Holidays are built around. Visitors should keep a respectful distance from the seals and watch the tide, as the shoreline can change quickly. There are no shops or facilities here, so bring warm layers and plenty of water. It suits those seeking a quiet, wildlife-rich beach experience on a classic Icelandic coastline.
