Last Minute Couples Holidays to Iceland

These are the places we most often recommend when a couple wants a base that combines comfort, evening atmosphere and easy access to the wider country.

• Akureyri: Akureyri is the largest town in northern Iceland, set on the long Eyjafjordur fjord and surrounded by mountains that catch the evening light. It sits a short drive from the Godafoss waterfall and offers a relaxed pace with cafes, a botanical garden and walkable streets. For couples who want a calmer base rather than a busy capital, we consider it a strong choice, though you will need to plan longer drives to reach the southern sights. Iceland holidays built around this town suit travellers who enjoy quiet evenings.
• Husavik: Husavik is a small harbour town on the north coast, known across the country as the main base for whale watching tours that leave from its quayside. The town centre sits close to the harbour, so an evening walk along the water before dinner is easy to arrange. Couples who value a shared outdoor experience at sea will find it memorable, and the same brief our Iceland All Inclusive Holidays deals are built around makes it simple to plan around it. We suggest booking the boat trip early in the day when conditions are usually calmest.
• Stykkisholmur: Stykkisholmur is a small town on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula with a harbour that serves as the ferry port for boat trips across the bay. Its quiet streets and modest hotels suit couples who want slow evenings rather than nightlife, and the peninsula scenery is close by. The trade-off is limited choice of restaurants compared with the capital, so we would recommend booking dinner in advance during the summer season.
• Hofn: Hofn is a fishing town in southeast Iceland and a practical base for visiting the glacier lagoon and the mountain headland of Vestrahorn. The town is quieter than the main tourist hubs and offers seafood restaurants along its harbour that many couples find especially welcome after a long day of driving. It suits a short stay focused on the east, the same brief our Iceland Last Minute Holidays deals are built around, and we would advise against it if you want the lively bar scene of the capital.
• Vik: Vik is a village on the south coast, set on the Ring Road and known for its black sand beach at Reynisfjara and its basalt sea stacks. Couples can combine a walk along the shore with a stop at nearby waterfalls, though the beach has strong waves and visitors should keep well back from the water. It is a good stop for a romantic coastal evening, and we recommend a room with a view over the village for the best atmosphere, the same kind of planning our Reykjavik holidays deals are built around.
