Booking Maldives holidays in December with Travelodeal means your package is carefully arranged as one trip, with flights, transfers and accommodation under a single booking. We take your payment, pass it on to each supplier, and keep the itinerary consistent from departure to return, so you have one point of contact throughout your entire trip.

December falls within the northeast monsoon, usually bringing drier, sunnier and calmer weather to the Maldives. Expect hot, humid days and good underwater visibility, making it a popular time for diving and snorkelling over the coral reefs. Gentler seas across the atolls suit lagoon swims, sunset cruises and island-hopping, and resort teams often run guided excursions at popular sites. Book early with Travelodeal, as peak-season demand rises quickly.

December is a sensible month to book because the drier conditions make the calmer resort lagoons and house reefs easier to enjoy, and demand for well-placed resorts can build quickly during the peak travel period. We check the flight routing, which usually involves a connection since there are no direct flights from London, and we confirm that your transfer from Malé International Airport to your chosen island is practical for your travel dates.

Why Book Maldives Holidays in December

Lagoon-front living

Many resorts are built on private islands, so you step from your villa straight into clear water. Reef-sheltered lagoons with gently shelving sand suit a slow morning swim. Few destinations make this so easy to do every day of a stay.

Reef life nearby

Extensive coral reefs and abundant marine life sit close to most resort shorelines. Sea turtles and reef rays are regularly spotted on house reefs. Dive centres are attached to most properties, so you can start learning without leaving the island.

Overwater privacy

Overwater bungalows are built on stilts above the lagoon, with direct access to the water. Many guests book them for honeymoons or anniversaries because of the seclusion they offer. Villa choice is one of the biggest decisions you will make.

Seaplane arrivals

Seaplane transfers are a signature way to reach remote resorts, with scenic views across the atolls. Flight times vary with distance, so ask us about your specific island before you travel. The approach itself often becomes a highlight of the whole trip, especially on a clear morning with the lagoons glowing below and the resort coming into view.

Atoll personalities

Each atoll feels different, from the resort-heavy north and centre to the quieter south. Huvadhoo Atoll is among the largest and suits travellers who want fewer crowds. Matching the atoll to your mood makes a real difference to how the holiday feels.

Easy island-hopping options

Speedboat and domestic flight connections let you combine atolls on a longer trip. Malé is a compact capital you can walk in an afternoon, and it works well as a starting point. This variety keeps a two-centre itinerary feeling fresh rather than repetitive, with a new landscape and pace each time you move between islands.

Your Guide to Maldives Holidays in December

December across the Maldives is consistently warm and humid, with the drier season bringing more sunshine and fewer rain showers than the southwest monsoon months.

Ari Atoll resorts: Ari Atoll sits a short hop away from the capital by speedboat or seaplane, so transfers are quick for travellers who want warm, sunny days without a long journey. In December the atoll tends to offer clearer water and plenty of sunshine on the resort beaches, and whale shark sightings are reported here. The trade-off is that the nearer resorts can feel busier than the far southern islands. For most travellers it strikes a good balance between warmth, convenience and marine life. It is exactly the brief our Maldives holidays deals are built around.
Baa Atoll: Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the northern central Maldives, is a strong choice for travellers who want warm weather alongside reef diving and manta ray encounters, the same brief our Maldives Luxury Holidays deals are built around. December conditions generally bring calmer seas here, which suits snorkelling from the shore and short boat trips to the reef. Visits to Hanifaru Bay are regulated to protect the animals, so you should expect limits on access. We recommend this atoll for those who value the reef environment as much as the beach.
Malé: Malé is the capital and the main gateway through Velana International Airport, and its compact streets stay warm through December. Its markets, mosques and waterfront make it a practical base for a short city visit before or after your resort stay. Because it is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, it feels very different from the quiet resort islands. Plan to walk through the local areas with respectful clothing.
Huvadhoo Atoll: Huvadhoo Atoll is the largest atoll by land area and sits further south, where resorts are quieter and the pace slows down. December warmth is steady here, and the drier season supports calm conditions for swimming and paddling. Reaching the atoll takes longer, usually by domestic flight and boat, so it suits travellers who are willing to trade transfer time for a more private, peaceful stay. It is a good option if you want the warmth without the bustle of the busier resort areas.
Addu Atoll: Addu Atoll, the southernmost atoll, offers warm December weather with a distinctly local character, including causeway-linked islands and historic WWII-era sites. Its larger local population means the feel is less resort-driven than in the northern atolls. Expect a longer journey by domestic flight to reach it, so plan your transfers carefully. We suggest it for travellers curious about a different side of the Maldives.

December is one of the most popular months for beach resorts because the drier season brings calmer lagoons and clearer water for swimming, paddling and snorkelling.

Dhigurah sandbank: Dhigurah is a local island in the southern reaches of the archipelago, home to a long sandbank that offers a quieter beach experience than the busier resort islands. Whale sharks are seen in nearby waters, and December's calmer seas make boat trips to the sandbank more comfortable. Access is by domestic flight and boat, so it involves a longer journey. We recommend it for travellers who want a long stretch of sand and a slower pace.
Thulusdhoo surf breaks: Thulusdhoo is a local island in Kaafu Atoll, reached by boat from the capital, and known for its surf breaks and relaxed atmosphere. December's drier conditions make it a comfortable base for those who want a beach stay with a local feel. Local island rules on dress and alcohol apply here, so you should plan accordingly. It suits surfers and travellers who prefer a more authentic island setting.
Maafushi: Maafushi is a local inhabited island with guesthouses and a short speedboat ride from the capital, making it popular with budget-conscious travellers. Its beaches are straightforward and easy to reach, and December weather is generally warm and settled. Alcohol is not sold on inhabited local islands, which is an important consideration when planning. It is a practical choice when a simpler, more affordable beach stay is the priority. It is exactly the brief our Cheap Maldives Holidays deals are built around.
Hulhumalé: It offers a more urban setting than the resort islands, with convenient access to the capital. Beach time here is more limited than on resort islands, so it works best as a short stay or a transfer base. It is a sensible option for travellers who want easy access and simple logistics.
Overwater villa resorts: Many resorts across the atolls offer overwater bungalows built on stilts above the lagoon, providing privacy and direct access to the water. December's calmer seas make these lagoons particularly inviting for swimming from the villa steps. Expect higher prices than local island guesthouses, reflecting the private setting and included facilities. These resorts suit travellers who want a self-contained beach holiday with easy water access. It is exactly the brief our Maldives Beach Holidays deals are built around.
