Maldives Holidays in May

Resort islands are the heart of most Maldives holidays, and in May the choice of atoll shapes how sheltered your lagoon will be.

• Overwater villas: Overwater bungalows are built on stilts above the lagoon and are offered at many resorts across the atolls. In May the lagoon can ripple under a stronger breeze, so the deck feels lively in the afternoons and calm in the early morning. Privacy and direct water access are the main draw, though rooms at the water's edge are typically priced higher than beach villas. We suggest them for couples who want the classic Maldivian setting and are happy to pay for it. It is exactly the brief our Maldives Beach Holidays deals are built around.
• Ari Atoll: Ari Atoll is one of the most visited atolls and sits relatively close to the capital by speedboat or seaplane, which keeps transfers manageable. In May the resorts here offer reliable boat access and strong marine life, though windy days can make open-sea crossings bumpier. The atoll combines convenient access with excellent reef snorkelling, making it a practical choice for a first Maldives trip. It works well for travellers who want good value and a short journey rather than a very remote.
• Baa Atoll: Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the northern central Maldives, known for reef diving and a number of resort islands. In May the sea can be choppy in exposed areas, so resorts on sheltered sides of the atoll often make the best base for snorkelling. The reefs remain rich with life, and the atoll is strongly associated with manta ray encounters during the right season. We recommend it for travellers keen on marine life who value a protected reef setting.
• Huvadhoo Atoll: Huvadhoo is among the largest atolls in the Maldives and lies in the south, reached by domestic flight and boat. In May its quieter resorts are less crowded, and the wind is often more noticeable across the open lagoons. Transfers take longer than to central atolls, so travellers should allow extra time on the travel day. It suits those seeking seclusion and fewer people, and who accept a longer journey for a calmer, more private stay.
• Addu Atoll: Addu Atoll is the southernmost atoll, with causeway-linked islands, WWII heritage and a larger local population than many others. In May the resorts and local islands are warm and humid, and the atoll offers a different feel from the central atolls. Its distance from the capital means a longer transfer, and resort facilities can differ from those further north. It is a strong choice for travellers interested in history and a more local island atmosphere rather than a classic overwater package.
