Weather in Greece in October

Cooler and wetter conditions are more likely in the north and the mountains, where autumn arrives earlier and the rain comes more often.

• Meteora: Meteora, near the town of Kalambaka in central Greece, is considerably cooler than the coast in October, with crisp mornings and occasional rain. The rock monasteries are open to visitors, but the paths can be slippery after showers, so sturdy footwear is essential. Clear, cool days make for excellent views across the valley. We would recommend it as a day trip or overnight stay for those who prefer cooler, scenic weather to beach sunshine.
• Thessaloniki: Thessaloniki, the main city of northern Greece, typically has cooler and wetter weather than the islands in October. Its waterfront and historic quarters remain pleasant to explore on dry days, and the city has a lively café culture. Evenings can feel chilly, so a warm jacket is worth packing. For travellers who enjoy city life in mild autumn conditions, it is a sound option.
• Chalkidiki: Chalkidiki's three peninsulas extend into the northern Aegean, and the sandy beaches here shelve gently into the sea. October is often cooler than the southern islands, with a higher chance of showers, yet the sea usually stays swimmable for much of the month. Most travellers arrive through the regional gateway airport serving northern Greece. We find it suits families and those who want a calmer, less exposed coastline.
• Zagori villages: The Zagori villages in the mountains of Epirus see cooler, damper autumn weather than most of Greece, with the landscape turning golden as the month goes on. Stone bridges and walking trails are the main draw, and the nearby Vikos Gorge is a striking place to explore. Rain is more likely, so flexible plans help. For walkers and nature lovers, October here is a rewarding, if cooler, choice.
• Ioannina: Ioannina, the largest town in the Epirus region, has cooler autumn temperatures and more frequent rain than the coast. Its lakeside setting and old quarter offer pleasant walking on drier days, and the local food scene is strong. Evenings can be cold, so warm layers are essential. We would suggest it as a base for visitors who want mountain scenery and a slower pace.
