Weather in Greece in September

The southern and eastern parts of the country generally hold the most consistent heat through the month.

• Rhodes: Rhodes typically keeps warm, dry days well into September, with the Dodecanese climate giving it some of the most reliable sunshine in the country. Faliraki offers sandy beaches within a short drive of the medieval Old Town, which is a good base for visitors who want both sea and history. Afternoons can still be hot, so we suggest planning sightseeing for the morning and saving the beach for the late afternoon. For a sunny, well-connected island with direct UK flights, it is a dependable option. It is exactly the brief our Rhodes holidays deals are built around.
• Crete: Crete is Greece's largest island, and its southern coast tends to stay warm and settled through September, with the mountains softening the wind. The island's main airport city is the usual arrival point for visitors, and Knossos lies roughly five kilometres from the centre of that busy hub, making it an easy day out for history lovers. Travel times can be longer on the island than many visitors expect, so we recommend choosing a base close to the attractions you most want to see. The island rewards a little planning with excellent food and a wide range of landscapes. It is exactly the brief our Crete holidays deals are built around.
• Athens: Athens is one of the hottest parts of mainland Greece, and September usually brings warm days that are noticeably easier than the summer peak. The city sits in a basin where heat can build, so an early start for the Acropolis helps you avoid the strongest afternoon sun. The airport is around forty kilometres from the centre, served by metro and express bus, which keeps city breaks simple. It is an excellent base for culture before or after an island trip. • Santorini: Santorini usually enjoys warm, settled weather in September, with the caldera views clear and sea temperatures still inviting for swimming. The island can feel busy in the evenings, particularly around Oia at sunset, so we suggest arriving before the crowds gather. Fira is the main town and works well as a base for ferry and bus connections. For visitors who want volcanic scenery and warm evenings together, it is a strong choice this month. • Kastellorizo: Kastellorizo is a small island lying close to the Turkish coast, and the ferry crossing from the nearby main island departs regularly during the summer. The weather usually remains warm and settled in early autumn, making it a pleasant time to visit, the same brief our Cheap Greece Holidays deals are built around. Its colourful harbour can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace, and it attracts far fewer visitors than the larger islands in the area. Ferry services thin out once the peak season ends, so it is wise to review the timetables closely before you set off. It is an ideal choice for travellers seeking peaceful sunshine and a genuinely off-the-beaten-track atmosphere.
