Cheap Family Holidays to Iceland

Island and fjord-side settings offer families a different rhythm, with ferries, harbours and dramatic arrivals by sea.

• Heimaey: Heimaey is the largest of the Westman Islands off the south coast, reached by a short ferry crossing that many families find a memorable part of the trip. The island has a compact town and walking routes over the volcanic landscape, which keeps the days simple for children. Because access depends on ferry timings, we build these crossings into the itinerary so that you are not left waiting on the quayside, the same careful planning that our Cheap Iceland Holidays deals are built around.
• Seydisfjordur ferry port: East Iceland ferry links are the sort of journey that sets a family holiday apart, with the Smyril Line ferry from Denmark and the Faroe Islands offering a sea crossing that children and parents often remember long after they have returned home. The colourful wooden houses and small harbour give young ones an easy town to explore on foot, which is exactly the kind of relaxed pace that the same brief our Iceland All Inclusive Holidays deals are built around. The crossing is long and the region is remote, so we recommend it for families who value the experience of arriving by sea over quick access.
• Flatey: Flatey is a small island in Breidafjordur bay reached by boat from the Snaefellsnes coast, offering a quiet setting with birdlife and very little traffic. It suits families looking for a half-day excursion rather than an overnight stay, since facilities on the island are limited. Boat schedules depend on the season and weather, so we flag these crossings clearly when we plan your days.
• Videy: Videy is a small island just offshore from the capital, reached by a short ferry ride that takes only a few minutes across the bay. It makes a gentle outing for younger children who would find longer boat trips tiring, and it gives parents a relaxed break from city streets. The island is quiet, so pack snacks and water, as there is little in the way of shops.
• Grimsey: Grimsey is a remote island off the north coast, reached by boat from the harbour village nearby, offering birdwatching and a far quieter atmosphere than the main towns. It is a considerable journey from the usual bases, so we recommend it only for families with older children who enjoy wildlife, the same brief our Iceland Adults Only Holidays deals are built around in spirit of calm and unhurried travel. Crossings can be cancelled in rough weather, so we advise building flexibility into the plan.
