The island combines geysers, waterfalls, lava fields and glaciers within a short drive of the capital.
Reykjavik is compact and walkable, with museums, harbour restaurants and easy access to day routes.
Geothermal pools are heated by volcanic activity and many stay open all year round.
Winter darkness creates a chance to see the aurora borealis from late summer through to early spring.
The Ring Road circles the island, linking coastal villages, glacier lagoons and quiet fjord towns.
Visitors can explore independently by car, or join guided tours where access or weather calls for expert help.
Edinburgh departures to Iceland are built around a short flight time, so most of your holiday is spent on the island rather than in transit.
Iceland's beaches are dark volcanic sand and wild Atlantic coastline rather than the warm shallow bays found elsewhere in Europe, so the right choice depends on what you want from the sea.
Many travellers find Iceland worth visiting because of its volcanic and glacial landscapes, which include geysers, waterfalls, black sand beaches and lava fields. The country is compact enough to see a good range of scenery in a single trip, especially when you base yourself in the capital. Travel costs are higher than in many European destinations, so it is worth weighing the expense against the experiences you want. For visitors who value dramatic nature, it is usually a rewarding choice.
