Weather in Maldives in February

The cooler, breezier side of February is typically found in the northern and central atolls, where the trade winds keep the air moving and the seas can feel livelier.

• Baa Atoll: Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the northern central Maldives, and February there is typically breezier than the southern atolls, with the trade winds keeping temperatures comfortable. The lagoons are generally calm during the dry season, which suits manta ray snorkelling and reef diving, though surface conditions can shift quickly. The trade-off is that a breezy day may feel cooler on the water than on the beach, so a light layer is worth packing. We recommend Baa Atoll for travellers who want strong marine life and a fresher February feel. It is exactly the brief our Maldives Beach Holidays deals are built around.
• Hanifaru Bay: Hanifaru Bay, part of the wider Maldivian reef system in the southern atolls, is a renowned manta feeding site, and its February conditions are typically breezy with calmer dry-season seas. Visits are regulated to protect the animals, so access is limited and planned around the bay's rules rather than on demand. The cooler air and steady wind make the water feel fresher than the inner lagoons, so a wetsuit can be a comfortable addition. We would suggest Hanifaru Bay for a focused marine trip rather than a pure sunbathing break.
• Ari Atoll: Ari Atoll is one of the most visited atolls, and in February its western sea breezes typically keep the afternoons cooler than the inland areas of the capital. The atoll is relatively close to the capital by speedboat or seaplane, so transfers are shorter than to the far south. The reefs are sheltered in many places, and whale sharks are regularly seen in the atoll. We find Ari Atoll a balanced choice, combining a fresher February breeze with convenient access and excellent reef life. • Thulusdhoo: Thulusdhoo is a local island known for its surf breaks, and February there typically brings a breezier sea that suits surfers and anyone who enjoys a fresher coastline. The island sits within the wider atoll region and is reached by boat from the capital in a short journey, which keeps the logistics simple. Local island rules on dress and alcohol apply, so you should plan your clothing and expectations accordingly. We see it as a good match for travellers who want energy in the water and a relaxed local atmosphere.
• Maafushi: Maafushi is an inhabited local island in the same atoll group as the capital's nearby waters, with guesthouses and easy speedboat access from the capital, and February there typically feels breezier on the seafront than in the city. The island is popular with budget-conscious travellers, so the atmosphere is more local than resort-based. Alcohol is not sold on inhabited local islands, which is worth planning for during a February stay. We recommend it for a cooler, lower-cost introduction to the Maldives that keeps transfers quick.
