Family Beach Holidays to Maldives

Beaches with consistent clean-water standards suit families who want to know the sea is well kept.

• Dhigurah sandbank: Dhigurah sits in the southern part of the Maldives' Alif Dhaal region, a local island with a long sandbank that stretches out along the lagoon edge. Reached by a domestic flight to the wider archipelago followed by a boat ride, it is a longer journey than the resort routes closer to the capital, which is worth knowing before you travel with young children. Nearby waters are known for whale shark sightings, though these are seasonal and never guaranteed. We suggest Dhigurah for families who value open sand and a quieter pace over resort facilities.
• Maafushi lagoon edge: Maafushi is a local inhabited island, a short speedboat ride from the capital and popular with budget-conscious travellers. The beach here is practical rather than polished, with guesthouses set back from the water and simple access to the shore. Because alcohol is not sold on inhabited islands, and modest dress is expected in public areas, families often find it a calm, straightforward base. We think it works well for a shorter stay with children who enjoy wandering into local life.
• Thulusdhoo shoreline: Thulusdhoo is a local island within the wider atoll, known for its surf breaks and a relaxed, local atmosphere, reachable by boat from the capital. The surf draws older teenagers and adults, so the calmer stretches of coast suit younger children better than the breaking water does. Dress and alcohol rules apply here, which shapes how a family spends its evenings. We recommend it to families who want a surf-aware beach without the resort crowd.
• Hulhumalé beachfront: Hulhumalé is a reclaimed island developed as a residential and commercial area, linked to the capital by causeway and close to the airport. Its beach is man-made and functional rather than natural, so it is not the choice for pristine coral sand. The advantage is convenience: a short transfer and easy access to the capital's shops and restaurants. We suggest it for families who want a night or two near the airport before heading to a resort island. It is exactly the brief our Maldives holidays deals are built around.
• Malé waterfront: The capital is the main port, a compact city where most streets can be walked in a short time. Its waterfront offers a quieter evening walk and local dining away from resort settings, and it is a good place for children to see everyday Maldivian life. Dress modestly in public areas and expect a busy, urban character rather than a beach resort feel. We see the capital as a useful bookend to a beach stay, not the beach itself.
