New Year to Maldives

Several Maldivian islands combine sheltered lagoons, children's programmes and easy transfers, which makes them practical bases for families spending the festive break together.

• Kuda Huraa: Its sheltered house reef offers calm, shallow water that suits young children learning to snorkel, while several properties provide dedicated children's clubs and family villas with additional space compared with standard rooms. Families with younger children often find the short transfer and convenient facilities here the most practical balance for a New Year break. Maldives Family Holidays
• Vilamendhoo Island: Vilamendhoo Island sits within Raa Atoll and is known for its gently sloping house reef, where colourful reef fish and the occasional sea turtle can be spotted just off the sand. The shallow, calm lagoon suits children who are confident swimmers as well as younger beginners wearing vests. Sightings of wildlife are never guaranteed, but the resort's easy beach entry and the short boat transfers make it a relaxed choice for family groups with mixed ages who want marine life on their doorstep.
• Hulhumalé Family Access: Hulhumalé is a reclaimed island connected to the capital by causeway and sits close to the airport, which makes it a practical base for families wanting short transfers and easy access to city amenities. The area offers a mix of local life and beach time, though it is more urban than a private resort island. Families who want a simpler arrival and a shorter first day often choose this option for part of their stay.
• Kuredu Island: A different beach may suit you better than the one you first had in mind, so consider Kuredu Island in Lhaviyani Atoll instead. This resort is well suited to families who want calm lagoons, a relaxed pace and plenty of space for children to play. The seaplane or speedboat transfer is short compared with more remote atolls, which makes planning simpler with young travellers. Check resort kids' club hours and the transfer schedule before booking, particularly over the New Year period when services can be busier.
• Maafushi Local Island Visits: Maafushi is a local inhabited island a short speedboat ride from the capital, offering guesthouse accommodation and a gentle introduction to local island life. Alcohol is not sold on inhabited local islands, and modest dress is expected in public areas, which families should plan for. It can work well as a short add-on experience for older children, though it is less suited to a full family holiday built around resort facilities.
