Tenerife: Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas sit on the sheltered southern side of the island, where cloud clears earlier in the day and the water is calmer than the north. Siam Park is a fifteen-minute drive from most southern hotels and is worth a full day of a seven-night stay. This is the pick for families who want a short walk from pool to sand.
Rhodes: Around four hours out, with Faliraki and Kalithea a twenty-minute transfer from the airport and Lindos an hour further down the coast. The eastern shore is the sheltered side, so mornings stay swimmable even when the meltemi wind gets up in the afternoon. The larger all-inclusive resorts here run structured kids' clubs rather than a single activity room.
Antalya: Turkey's Mediterranean coast gives you the largest resorts for the money, with the Lara Beach hotels twenty minutes from the terminal and the bigger Belek complexes forty minutes west. Board usually extends to à la carte restaurants and snack bars rather than one buffet hall. Flights sit at roughly four and a quarter hours.

Couples and Adults-Only Summer Escapes

Adults-only stock is finite in July and August, and the properties that hold their evening atmosphere go earliest. These five suit couples who want the hotel quiet and the surroundings doing the work.

Santorini: The caldera villages of Oia and Imerovigli are built into the cliff face, so most rooms trade beach access for a terrace and a sunset that justifies the rate. The airport road across the island takes half an hour, and flights run about four hours. We would take three or four nights here paired with a beach island rather than a full week.
Sorrento: The clifftop town looks across the bay to Vesuvius and puts the Amalfi Coast road, the Capri ferries and Pompeii inside a morning's travel. Rooms are smaller and older than a purpose-built resort, and what you buy instead is a position nobody can build. Naples airport is an hour by private transfer, longer on the coast road in August.
Paphos: Cyprus turns in the warmest, driest summer of anywhere we list, with sea temperatures near 27 degrees by August. The seafront hotels west of the harbour are within walking distance of the archaeological park, and Coral Bay is fifteen minutes north for a proper swimming beach. Adults-only spa properties here hold availability later than most.
Lake Garda: Verona airport is under an hour from Sirmione and Bardolino, and the lake stays several degrees cooler than the Adriatic coast right through July. The evenings are the reason to come: waterside dinners, a passenger ferry between villages, no beach day required. This is the choice for couples who want to walk, eat and swim without a resort programme.
Madeira: Four hours out and reliably in the mid-twenties through August rather than the mid-thirties. Funchal's hotels are cut into the hillside above the harbour, and the levada walks begin within a short drive of most of them. Couples who would rather have scenery and a long dinner than a lounger rota do well here.
